first of all- stop biting them!! i have a problem biting my cuticles. there is a version of neosporian cream that has pain relief in it. this is what i have used in the past. i say spend 10 bucks and a tip on a professional manicure and everytime you want to bite, look at how nice the manicure looks. if that doesn't work , imagine how many germs are under a nail, and that you are eating them, each time you start chewing. good luck!

To sooth the pounding of exposed nerves, you need to reduce swelling. Put your hand in cool, not cold water and let it soak for 10 minutes. Do this at least 5 times for a day and you will see improvement.
If the areas turn red, you have developed an infection so you will need to put antibiotic ointment on the area around the nails and slip your hands into rubber gloves over night. If the redness continues for three days, go to the doctor for antibiotics.
I suggest you go to Walgreens and get the nail bitters bitters. Follow the instructions to stop this habit.
Also, you can put a rubber band around your wrist and snap it every time you go to bite. This is a technique which will break your brain of the habit.
Good Luck and I hope the pain subsides. Add a suggested dose of Tylenol to reduce the pain and swelling if you need to. Tylenol only works if you do it according to the instructions for a few days. Just one dose won't do it.

i used to bite my nails. i would often bite too far if i had been drinking wine. to stop myself i bought some white cotton gloves from boots the chemist and wore them as soon as i got home. each time i went to bite my nails there was a reason not to, the gloves. it took about 6 weeks before i got fed up with the gloves but i broke the habit. i dont know quite how long it took but within 6 weeks! now when i am drinking wine or bored i file my nails and paint them.

it is not what you are doing to the nails so much as what you wash and paint them with. the tip of the nail in dead but at the base it is living with most nail polish contains chemicals that the body can't cope with so it gets infected and the finger nail is there to protect the fingers at the tips the most sensitive part of the hand find a better soap and nail polish

Try warming some wax from a candle till it is melted but not hot enuff to burn, then spead a little over the exposed area. that should do it, it sounds like the nerve endings under the nail were exposed, and it is just like a tooth. nerve endings despise air.

Put some hydrogen peroxide on it. It will help heal it and stop the pain.
Neosporin and a bandaid will help also.
