All religions have their wacky components, but if you ask me, the wackiest I've ever heard is scientology (if you would even call it a religion). Basically, L. Ron Hubbard, a science fiction writer who when he got older lived on a yacht in the middle of the ocean to avoid owed taxes, invented a religion based on science fiction. I know it's a little lazy to refer to this web site, but Wikipedia comprehensively summarizes the "beliefs" of scientology, including the stuff about being "clear," a "theta clear," and my favorite -- the evil alien dictator Xemu. It makes for amusing reading. What's not so amusing, and downright sad, is that anyone could be taken in by this absolute bunk. I feel sorry for Katie Holmes who, from all I've read, is absolutely miserable with her husband Tom.
