I think that it depends on a few different things such as whether it is summer or winter, how often the dog is outside and, of course, what type of dog it is. If you live in a hot climate, maybe a little more often in the summer. With that said, I would say once a month is pretty good. I have a chocolate chihuahua and a bigger mixed breed. One is inside and one is out. I've learned that (because of the little one) some dogs have different needs due to their skin types; just like us!

A dog should only be bathed when absolutely necessary. People are way over-bathing their dogs and it dries out their skin and coats horribly. Your dog will stay quite clean with thorough brushing weekly. If you're giving him either a salmon oil capsule daily, or 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil on his food, that helps out both skin and coat. In that case, bathing him about every 6 weeks - if he needs it - wouldn't hurt.

i think opinions are mixed on this for many people. we have two boxers who are predominantly indoor dogs. they spend about 3 hours a day outside and we only bathe them about 3 times a year. whenever the weather is yuck or they come in smelling "doggy" we just wipe them down with baby wipes and it works fine. they have very sensitive and dry skin and i don't want to aggravate that and they do fine with that so that's what we do.

If your dog's hair is dirty with the feces of other animals, you should clean him immediately. But it is not necessary a complete cleansing. You can leave the mud in his hair till it dries, and then brush it out. It's not recommendable to wash the hair frequently, because it eliminates the waterproof natural agents, and tends to tarnish the skin.

Well, i have a border collie and we bathe him by taking him to petsmart or something every 2-4 weeks it depends on how dirty he gets. but if he spent the day outside rolling in the mud we would take him the next day!

I'd say 1 a month, i know its costly, but if you have a long haired dog such as a golden or border collie, not grooming them can lead to painful infections on their skin called hot spots, as for short haired dogs, like labs and rotwiellers, dirt and other stuff builds up and causes great discomfort such as constant itching, chewing, and gnawing. please groom your dog monthly, if this is too costly, groom the dog yourself, or get your kid neighbor to do it.
