I read the Qur'an, I bought a few books on Islam (my favorite is Believing Women in Islam by Asma Barlas, who is a strong Muslim women that does not agree with the patriarchal interpretations of the Qur'an and hadith that most men have pushed over the years).
I am not Muslim, but I feel justified discussing Islam because I educated myself, rather than listening to the mass media and their sick crap.

Islam, like all religions, is only has good as those who interpret the religious scriptures. Although Islam history is rather sorted. Based on history, both Islam and Christianity are determined to make the whole world believe what they do. The big difference; individual rights....but that stems from the political environment.

I learnt a small amount in religous education. I also happen to be lucky enough to live in a very multicultural area with a high number of people from varying religions and some Muslims (Always Shia for some reason) are happy enough to converse about religion in an adult manner. My knowledge is still very limited but at least I have never been preached at or had anyone try to force beliefs on me. If I wanted to learn more there is a Mosque within 3 miles of my house and they allow people to visit.
I'm not religous I do however try to live my life by the Christian "Golden Rule" Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Good luck and remember there are always different interpretations of all religous texts, and there are always people willing to undermine religion for their own purposes.

An-Nisa 4:89, is the very character of the "religion." Learned that from, 9-11, and Muslims on the internet that told me,"We will control the World."
I also know that Al'lah is a contraction of Ali-lah, which is a god of the moon. This explains the crescent moons on 5 nations flags.
Most muslim nations, 8 of them, still have laws in their constitution to kill anyone who converts to any other religion from Islam.
When Muhammed had trouble getting converts, he and his followers went to Medina and began killing everyone who didn't convert to Islam.
Nothing in their "Old Testament" from Genesis through Malachi read MUCH like the Dead Sea Scrolls, which are the oringinal scripts of the Old Testament, and older than the Qu'ran.

I know a lot about Islam, but there is always so much more to learn, even for those born Muslim. I learned most of what I know from studying Islam and from talking to Muslims. My husband is also Muslim so he helped answer many questions I had. I reverted last night.

In school. I also taught about it (an overview) for High School level classes. Currently I'm slogging through the Qu'ran but it's slow going.
I know the basics: 5 pillars, shia, sunni, that kind of thing.

I know that Islam makes women possessions and not true equal humans. Reality.
I also know that it is against Islam to either earn interest or to pay interest. We are selling a commercial building to a Muslim.
Also, Mary, the mother of Jesus, is mentioned more times in the Quaran than in the bible. And she is more highly revered in Islam than in Christianity. Studying religion
And I also know that Islam, like Christianity, is in place to make people come to terms with their inevitable death and to control the population so that those in power, remain in power by fear and manipulation.

I first seriously heard about it from someone I had met at college. Of course I had heard all the crud on CNN previously. Then I did my own research and asked lots and lots of questions. :)
