It's on the knuckle, happened 10 mins ago - I've been trying with tweasers to get any lead out but have had no success. There's just a cut with a tiny black spot about 3mm in diameter. How should I treat this - keep digging with tweasers or put something on?

Any advice is appreceated as I don't want lead poisioning - thanks!

Thanks all. I dug a bit, sucked a bit, dug some more - it seems as if the skin has just been stained and the some of the skin that's stained is quite deep and hard to dig so... I'm just going to put some anti-bac on it an leave it. As long as I don't need to worry about lead poisioning that's ok!

Thanks again for the quick responses - if I hadn't got them I might have started amputating my thumb or something stupid like that!

You will not get poisoned as it is not metallic lead there, but inert carbon.

Do not dig, as it is usually just staining of the wound by the pencil lead, and your body can get rid of this either by exfoliating, or if there really is a piece of lead there, engulf and break it down eventually. Digging just causes more skin damage.

First off try tweezers some more and if not than don't worry about it you can't get lead poisoning because its graphite not lead its still called lead but its graphite I am not dead and I have had the tip of a regular pencil in the palm of my hand for 7 years you will be fine look it up or call the hospital if you don't believe me.

Pencils are not made with lead anymore they are made from graphite so you do not need to worry about lead poisoning. If you are digging for the "lead" then make sure you are using sterilized tweezers to avoid an infection. I would stop and leave it alone. If it is really bothering you then go see your doctor and see what he/she has to say.

I do not think you will get lead poisoning. My daughter who is 36 has the tip of a pencil in her low back from High school.
Some genius stabbed her in the back.

Put a little Hydrogen Peroxide on it to see if it will bubble out.

Wow! Relax. You will not be in danger of poisoning. You have to wait this one out. Digging will only make it worse. It's not a solid piece of something that will all come out together. I had a piece of graphite in the palm of my hand for years while it worked itself out. It made for great dinner conversation. Just be careful next time.

how did you manage that?!?! theres nothing you can do. sucking and spitting wont work. neither will 'softening the skin'. treat it like one would treat a splinter. leave it there and your body will naturally push it out through the growth process. btw you wont get lead poisoning. pencils are made from graphite nowadays

Soak finger to soften skin before trying to "dig" it out, failing that local A&E!!!

treat it as if you were stung in the sea (forgot the creature's name - not jellyfish, like a sea hedgehog)
olive oil helps it slither out - do not dig too much
