Prior to the coming of Islam, the pagan Arabs had many wives at times. Islam limited the number of possible wives to four, which at the time was a big step. There was a good reason for having more than one - in those days, if a man died fighting in a war, his widow would be left behind very likely without a way to make a living; therefore, she could re-marry.
Personally, I think that this is just one example of outdated Islamic customs that should spark a reform within Islam. Too bad so few agree.

This was first allowed when men were being killed in battles and many women and children were being left with no one to care for the. It allowed for men who were capable to take care of these woman and children and make sure they did not suffer. Today is not practiced nearly as much because Islam commands its men to treat every wife equally both financially and emotionally. If they are not capable of doing so, they they are not permitten to marry more than once. Also, in many Muslim countries, the husband must have the permission of the first wife to marry another woman. If she says no, then he cannot.

I think it's more an old Arab custom (cultural) than religious. Then the Koran says, if you're going to have more than one, you need to treat them all as equals. Don't think the Koran condones polygamy, just fair treatment if you do. Koran accommodates the prevailing culture of the time when Islam first spread in the Arabian peninsula.

HERES SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
The population ratio of woman to man is increasing all the time. In fact the Quran predicts that the ratio of woman to man will be 70 woman to 1 man.
dont you wonder who the woman will marry then?
SOMETHING ELSE TO THINK ABOUT
Many woman would prefer their man to marry a second and third wife instead of being cheated on..........and infedelity and divorce is, as you know, on an alarming increase.
-solution : marry more than one if you can treat them alike and have the means to do so. (hint. YOU GOT TO BE PIOUS)

They only merry one but out of support if you want to merry women not out of lust then thats allowed provided you first wife agrees and your can keep justice. Secondly muslims dont do divorce or change partners, they always have a monogamous relation. They follow what God wants them to follow!

this is not true.only a man who is sure he can behave beetween his wives like each other can have four wives.according to:
".If you fear that you will not act justly towards the orphans, marry suchwomen as seem good to you, two, three, four; but if you fear you will not be equitable, then only one, or what your right hands own; so it is likelier you will not be partial."
