Well, that all depends. Basically, I would say that you'd require a salary of at least $3,000 a month to be comfortable in NYC. Rents usually start at about $1,000/month, groceries are slightly more expensive, and if you want to take the subway or bus every day, it'll cost you quite a bit each month (I don't know how much the monthly pass is nowadays).
If you chose to live in Brooklyn or Queens, though, you could survive on much less. If you shared an apartment in one of the boroughs, you could probably spend about $500-600/month on rent, but transportation and other necessities would still be costly.
New York is second only to San Francisco in the US for cost of living.

You mentioned "New York City" which means all of the 5 boroughs, Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island. Median pay for rent for a one bedroom apartment (with kitchen) AWAY from manhattan will cost you about $800-$1000. You can always rent just a room, which may average about $600, but you have no privacy, you would have to share bathrooms,kitchen and living room. If you are living in Manhattan, expect to pay no less than $1000.

Depends on where you want to live and what kind of living you want to do. If you live in Manhattan and you want a small studio apartment you can live ok on about 60k a year. You can live in Brooklyn, queens, Bronx, and make a little less.
As a side note, they say that manhattan is a place where you can make 100k a year and be considered poor....this is a bit of an exagerration, but not far off. NYC is a very expensive place, especially if you want to have a life and a nice place to live.

I have a roommate that splits the rent with me on an apartment I've had for 10 years. We also split the electric bill. There is no gas or heat bill. You can't get a 2 bedroom apartment anymore for what I pay.
My expenses are: (monthly)
Rent: $481
electric bill: $40 (approx.)
subway: $50 (approx.)
my food: $60 (I get $140 in food stamps as well)
pet food/products: $65 (approx.)
cigarettes: $161
Total = about $854 a month
I usually end up spending more though...
