Just about everyone in the Olde Age community has put out a Tarot deck. I chose my first deck based on where I was at the time both spiritually, and physically. Meaning, I'm at an event and I see a deck that was perfect! I was gardening alot, and the deck highlighted Fairies and the nature kingdom. For me, that lines up. Working with animal totems, I came across an animal deck. See the corrilation? Use your awareness to decide. How you see the world at the moment could very well decide, which deck is yours.
Christians. This is a Spiritual community as well as a Religious one. Please don't be so quick to point questions like this in the direction of Mythology. YOu and your beliefs take center stage at about 90 to 1 in Y!A

contrary to what some of the above say... its not evil.
anyway, how do you pick the perfect deck... in short... take your time, and let it find you. when you find the right one... you'll probably know it, like if theres a box of decks, and you think "ooh this one looks neat" and set it aside in the box... and just keep coming back to it, ... or only one looks all that interesting or "feels" right... just trust that instinct.
sometimes it will be even more dramatic. I had a friend once who from what she told me, one of her decks literally jumped at her, like fell onto her from a higher shelf while she was looking around for something else, when there was no "normal" reason for it to have fallen like that.
but really once you have it, it gets infused with "you" and all that. its really kinda interesting.
edit: also, as a technicality... tarot isn't "inquiring of the dead" its a method of diviniation. it allows you to display to yourself and inteperet knowlege that you already have and can perceive at a different level of awareness, in the concious one.

I've heard several people say that you should be given your first deck of tarot cards. Personally I think it doesn't matter.
What you are looking for is symbols, the cards, you connect with. There are so many out there now with different myths that you might pick a myth that you are familar with. It's just really a personal choice.

Buy a basic inexpensive deck to learn with and then, take a look at the sites I posted. That first site is excellent for learning and the second is a source with hundreds of different decks to see what catches your eye.

Go talk to the owner of a mystic shop. They may be able to help. Actually, I believe that if you want to work with a deck of tarot cards, go to the store, look at them, feel them, and the right ones for you will speak to you and you will pick the right ones.

Yes, Carmi, it does matter. I have nearly a dozen packs, but i always use the Aquarian pack illustrated by David Palladini. It just feels right to me. Look around, use a pack which you like the look of, try another one. In the end you may do what I did, and actually change the meanings of some of the cards. For instance, the Hanged Man is, to me, looking at the same thing you and I see, but from a different viewpoint. See my meaning there. Contact me if you would like to discuss this.

different decks work differently for different people. Shop around, look at the various decks and buy one that "feels" good to you. You may have to try a few different decks to find one that works well with you.
I, however, still feel that it is not the cards, it is you. Still though, you should feel comfortable with whatever deck you choose.

It depends on why you want them. If you want a deck that is easily correspondent to the Qabala, as I do... go to the Golden Dawn deck or Crowley's Thoth deck. Personally, I feel they are the only decks other than ones made with Crowley's corrections... which tend to be home-made.

Go to your nearest new age shop and check what decks they have. Hold a pack and see how it feels. pick up a few and see which one feels right. If you keep going back to one pack in particular then that's the pack for you. Rider waitte is the most common used one. But they have to feel right to you. Blessed be.
