It gives them a sense of self-inflated importance. They are saying (in a non-subtle way) to the world "look how VITAL my connection to others is...I can't even unhinge myself from communication without risking the end of life as we know it. You're lucky I'm even here".

I agree. I have seen some places with signs at the counter that say "No talking on cell phones" and yet people continue to do it. I think those people should be pointed towards the sign and told to either hang up or come back. Even when I am on the phone at home and someone knocks on my door, I either hang up or put the phone down. It is just called good manners to speak to one person at a time even it is for one minute.

Well said!
You are not the only one who feels this way....Many people have seen business people on the phone in their cars and were impressed by the status of this luxury.
"Wow! He's talking on the telephone while he's driving"!!! He must really be important!
So??!! If someone is working and has to get to the next client call or appointment, it is necessary. If you are in sales, it may be imperative to keep a cell phone. If you are a business owner or contractor, you can save valuable time and therefore money, by having a cell phone in the vehicle.
But, to keep talking while you are with friends in a restaurant or bar, to call someone while waiting in line at McDonald's, or to chit-chat while driving your little brats to pre-school in your little red mini-van?????? WHO THE HELL COULD YOU POSSIBLY BE TALKING TO THAT IS THAT IMPORTANT?
HANG UP AND DRIVE!!!

regardless of my avatar, i'm a woman. i hit upon it very uninteresting to be using alongside and characteristic no man or woman to seek suggestion from, so I commonly call human beings. If the radio did not suck lately, i'd likely be listening to it fairly of being on the phone. even though it provides me a probability to have a speedy capture-up with someone, and earlier the awkward silences initiate, i can say "nicely, I gotta bypass. I purely were given to so-and-so." and that i refuse to communicate on it at the same time as i'm with somebody else, finding out on the food market, etc. it really is impolite. And that is a Toyota, BTW.

Nope you are not the only one who feels that way. It is very rude to not give someone your full attention. Some people just think it makes them look so important when they try to deal with more than one person at a time.

I agree with you. I find it very insulting and distracting to be with someone who gets calls on their cell phones or text messages and then spend the time you are with them, talking to someone else. Put that much attention on the people you are with, not who is on the phone. Ignore the cell phone or keep is short by saying, "I am with so and so, I will call you back later." It is that simple.

They want to look important and that they are "someone". I'm a cashier and thats the most annoying thing.Trying to tell them their total...or something else...like i need your drivers license for their check. People are so disctracted. The thing thats the most annoying is the blue-tooth thing.....they just look so stupid.
