It certainly hasn't been very democratic for the 800,000 or so civilians who have been killed or otherwise had their lives destroyed by consequences of the failure to make the country stable and peaceful.

Some would say that freedom has a price, and sometimes it must be paid in blood, unfortunately it is mostly the blood of innocents caught up in a whirlwind, who are losing hope of a normal life.

Of course, they did get to vote in an election, it's a shame though that the success of that election process made much difference to the general population... they still live in fear of insurgents, or accidents by the very troops who are ostensibly there to stabilise and bring peace and hope to the country.

It's a shame that the democracy Iraq had in the 1950's wasn't left well alone by Britain and her allies... it was our intervention that led to the Baath Party coming to power because we didn't like the politics of the then democratically elected government.

Hello,

(ANS) Yes! thats a very good insight and I totally agree with you. The way I see it is that you cannot impose democracy on a country or a group of people. The Americans or should that be specifically Mr. Bush seems to enjoy this very odd fantasy that "he" the president of the USA has this god given mission to impose his kind of "freedom & democracy" i.e. American style democracy upon the rest of the planet.

**Of course this fantasy is doomed to failure!!

**Nobody ever asked the Iraqi people if that was what they wanted?, even though the Iraqi people had suffered under Saddam at least there was a strange kind of stability. But now theres non & people are dying every single day because of Muslim extremism.

**Democracy has to be built from the ground upwards, democracy has to flourish in the hearts & minds of the people, the people themselves have to want it deep down. Otherwise its NOT going to work ever.

Democracy is imposed on the autocratic leaders, but the Iraqis want it (apart from the terrorist, Iranian-backed fools killing everyone in sight). Imposing democracy on Japan and others worked wonders after WWII; was that wrong? But judging by at least one of your recent answers you'd rather be ruled by Mugabe than someone who loved democracy.

I guess what you meant to ask was: Does Iraq want our form of democracy (whatever that actually means in the long run) even if it means staying there till we have completely drained every dollar in the treasury to fund the so-called war effort, though we could have used those billions of dollars to build a better future for our children, and future retirees? The answer to that question depends on your P.O.V., but the key word here is democracy, and if Socrates were alive today, he might ask, "What is democracy?"

They chose their form of government I personally think they would be better off had they copied our federal, state, and local government. It would be perfect for them with the three groups of people they have. That with equal distribution of oil revenue would have been perfect but they chose a different style of democracy. If they don't want it they can always change when we leave, they can change now if they want just say the word and we will leave. I personally don't think democracy is a good thing in the arab world because given the chance I think some of the countries would elect someone like bin laden.

George Bush Sr knew that Saddam replaced right into a stabilizer for a rustic made through imperial powers in a area of different peoples(see boo-boo's of previous heritage... even with the reality that on the time it regarded a sturdy idea through the colonial powers)! And so stopped short of eliminating our guy Saddam(he had finished help and had formerly been US best buddy) after he reacquired Kuwait(traditionally element of the important element of Iraq) AFTER our signaling it replaced into ok- oops... We're giving them democracy so they can choose what kind of government they want to have in the future. If they want to keep democracy, that's fine. They can also vote to bring a new form of government to Iraq. They can make a dictatorship, like Venezuela is doing with that Hugo guy. We're giving them the choice to do what they want.

The Americans and British dont want to impose democracy as they would not know what this is if it hit them in the face what they want is to take over iraq and run all its industries and especially the oil fields for the enrichment of the crooks and drug dealers who own all the big energy companies and of course to allow the Americans to drive their big gas guzzling motors.

you are quite correct the imposition of any belief system from outside - by force is the very essence of totalitarianism. The war in Iraq was a bad idea for so many reasons that it is just sad. In many ways it is worse than the Vietnam mess. And ten years ago I would have bet you good money that that was a FUBAR that could never been beat.

Democracy has nothing to do with an Army going into a country and establishing a new government. It was democracy that elected the officials who decided to send the troops into said country.
