I am here for a number of reasons. First, I majored in philosophy and theology. I have a keen interest in religion. One can be interested in a phenomenom without being part of it. For instance, I am a very serious birder, but I am not a bird! :-)

Second, I see a lot of misinformation here, attacks as it were, on religions like catholicism, usually by fundamentalist Christians. I really dislike this and have answered numerous questions of this type with factual information, even though I am no longer catholic.

Third, I want people to realize that atheists are not evil monsters with horns and tails. We are thoughtful, funny, warm, loving people as well as jerks, just like the rest of the human race. I would like to put a face to the term. (Ok, I know you cant actually see my face, but you get the idea. By the way, when you think of my face, remember I am incredibly gorgeous and thin, very very thin!)

Now, I do get a bit smart alecky from time to time, but I try to do it with respect. I hope people see that from me. I do not hate religious people. I do not hate God. I care about humanity deeply.

Peace

I think it has something to do with some of your religious brethren's abrasive and intolerant attitudes as much as anything else. The 'questions' I usually answer in this category are the ones that make me angry by stating--not implying--that I am a fool or an idiot because I don't believe what the asker believes. So I defend myself. That, I think we can both agree, is human nature.
Thanks for a thought-provoking question.

Honestly...It is very very hard for me to understand why people believe the things they do.....No disrespect but man some of the stuff in the bible...??? I mean come on how can any intelligent human being believe this stuff?

So I come here to get there point of view. Believe me I wish I could just have blind faith like the religious do an sometimes I am a little jealous!! But my logical mind just will NOT allow me to believe such fairy tales!!

I guess this question is asked almost eveyday. It does kill me that there are a lot of atheists at this site. I mean if I was atheists I wouldn't be hanging out at a religious site arguing with christians. Have you notice that they love to attack christians like their is no other religion at this site.

I asked this question a couple of nights ago. And one atheist explained her feelings were that although she did not believe in God, she found chrisitianity very interesting.

Neither does this category contain the words 'Christian' or 'Circle-Jerk' - yet there seem to be those who would have it as such.

Religion is perforce extremely important to everyone - atheists included - because of the impact it has on all our lives. And to atheists, that impact is very, very negative and frightening. This is largely because religion doesn't stay confined to people's minds or their churches.

We watch with horror as three contenders for the president of the US publicly announce that they don't 'believe in' evolution - as if it were a matter of belief - because it conflicts with their (or their voters') religious agenda.

How did we get to this? Not accepting evolution is as deranged as not accepting gravity. It's not up for democratic discussion, any more than is the result of 2+2! If the world is to be made to suffer the presence in our midst of a massively-armed nation that rejects elementary facts of biology, and yet feels it has the right to impose its will by force on other nations, you bet we're interested!

This forum is a special place: religious or atheist discussion groups tend to be places for intelligent - if heated - debate among those who largely understand the issues. Here you find people who simply WILL NOT understand. Horrifyingly, they represent a truer picture of the mind of believers than the more formal group, and the picture is ghastly.

I've learned a lot from my involvement here, and very little of it has been reassuring. It's good to see that atheists are out of the closet, and mad as hell. But it's a shock to learn that their opposition is, practically speaking, completely out of its mind.

The category is "Religion & Spirituality" not, "Believers in Religion & Spirituality". In any of the other categories you will find people on the various sides of that category. For some reason the believers can get upset when you don't share their beliefs.

Because atheists have the correct answers to many of these questions.

In theory, anyway, this is a site on which people ask questions and others answer them.

If one who claims that God is not, is attracted to spiritual things, it is because of the little voice within which is guiding them out of their erroneous suppositions. So in reality, they have no choice. They must be here answering questions.

they are trying to make you feel stupid for being religious or spiritual, because to them it doesnt make sense, there is no scientific explanation for it ...

how many decent religious answers have come from an athiest person without having your religion or your beliefs put down?

they must be amused by religion enough though to want to comment on it (not always a positive comment either)
