No, dogs won't go blind from eating chocolate, as far as I know.

Chocolate is poisonous for dogs, though, as it contains theobromine, which dogs can't break down as easily as humans.

Critical dosis depends on the amount of theobromine consumed according to body-weight. Poisonous levels are 100-150 mg of theobromine per 1 kg of body weight.
That is a large dog might eat a chocolate bar and feel fine, whereas the same amounth of chocolate consumed by a small dog would kill it.

Also different types of chocolate contains different levels of theobromine with milk-chocolate (average 150 mg/100 gram) containing the least and dark chocolate for cooking containing the most (average 1400 mg/100 gram). The above number are for European chocolate, I believe U.S. milk chocolate has less cocoa content.

Symptoms occur 12-24 hours after ingestion and can include:

increased irratability
irregular heart beat
restlessness
increased urination
increased drinking
muscle spasms
muscle stiffness
uncoordinated movements
vomitting
diarrhoea

The dog can die from acute circulatory disturbances.

I didn't know about chocolate being poisonous when I had my first dog and she was fine, but my next dog won't be getting any chocolate, I don't want to risk anything.

There is nothing in chocolate thats deadly or harmful in chocolate. if a dog eats to much itll have the same affect as with a human maybe a tummy ache or alot of bathroom trips lol. but like anything if they ate to much yes it would harm them. this is the same with humans u can overdose on anything if u eat or drink to much.but for real a hershey bar or what ever will not kill a dog and will not make them go blind. Think about it u ever hear of a wolf in the wild that died from eating raw meat. most likely not so no a candy bar wont hurt a dog.

not sure about the blind thing but i do know that chocolate is VERY TOXIC to dogs and can kill them if given in moderate amounts. its better to be safe than sorry....keep your dogs away from any and all chocolate. (after all, blindness may be the least of your worries)

I've fed my pooch chocolate before and he can still see just fine. But a friend told me chocolate gives dogs heart attacks; don't know if it's true though

Emphasis on the 'fed before' part, cuz i stopped as soon as I heard it was dangerous

Its toxic to them and will kill them, I don't know if it makes them go blind though.

Edit: According to Talkingtothevet.com Bakers choc is the worst, 2oz of baking choc given to a 15lb dog will put them at risk of becoming very ill or dying.

No. The theobromine in it can cause kidney failure if too much is eaten. Read this:

I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A DOG GOING BLIND DUE TO CHOCOLATE, BUT IT WILL KILL THEM AND MAKE THEM VERY ILL.CHOCOLATE IS POISON FOR THEM IF THEY DON'T DIE THE FIRST TIME, IT WILL SOONER THEN LATER.

it's more likely to kill them. dogs can't metabolise certain chemcials in chocolate so they just build up in their system slowly becoming more and more toxic. the most common reaction is very runny poo for up to 2 days when ingested in small amount, in larger organ failure.
