I'm also from Melbourne, so might be considered to be biased, but I would argue that Melbourne's got a great diversity of lifestyle choices, great job opportunities, a really eclectic blend of cultures and ethnic backgrounds - no matter where you're from, you'll probably find something/someone you can identify with here.
Melbourne's a very popular business centre and has excellent employment opportunities.
It's also considered to have the greatest range of arts, entertainment, cafés and restaurants, al fresco dining, etc...
Melbourne/Victoria also attracts heaps of "major events", including the motorcycle grand prix, Formula 1, Australian Open Tennis, and one-offs (we've just had the Commonwealth Games and the Swimming Championships).

I know you want to experience other cultures and people, so my advice may not be what your looking for, but Sydney and Melbourne have 'little Italy's" Leichhardt in Sydney's inner city has a wonderful little Italy, very sophisticated and a pleasure to spend a sunny morning sipping latte alfresco style. Sydney has plenty of well paid jobs and excellent accommodation. Great weather and beaches too. The locals are friendly and very happy to assist travelers. A great cosmopolitan city.

Sydney is the biggest and best city in Australia and the Melbournians are kidding themselves if they think rents are cheaper in Melbourne, they aren't. Sydney has everything Melbourne has plus the Harbour and beaches. Melbourne is a great city, don't get me wrong - I've lived there three times, but Sydney is just that much better.

I come from Melbourne and i think that its great here.
Sydney has extremely high rent prices so dont go there, Brisbane is fine, but i think its the same as Sydney. Perth is extremely hot. Adelaide dosent have much and neither does Alice Springs. Darwin i have no idea about but i dont really go there.
Melbourne is pretty good. The temperature is nice and there seems to be alot of places looking for people at the moment plus the rent isnt that high, well i dont think it is.
I hope that helped you.
