that depends on whether or not you intend to buy her a separate wedding ring set.. if you plan to get her an upgrade later on, i'd say to get her about a 1/2 carat or so.. if you plan on just getting her a band later, i'd go for at least a 1 carat.. unless she's not into the big diamonds.. it's up to you guys though!!

The average carat size is under a carat and the quality is quite low. This purchase is a very personal thing.
As far as the amount that you spend I think that's pretty much up to you. I don't agree that you shouldn't "go into debt". I think that's a relative term. I have heard of people financing the purchase with a 0% APR credit card and paying it off in a year. I wouldn't call that "going into debt". I think that it also depends on the girl.
One of the best answers that I heard before buying a ring was -- "it can never be too big". Shallow, but true.

Besides being able to afford it, also take the size of her hand into consideration. My hand is large, and my 1 carat center stone looks very good, but my cousin's hand is much smaller, and so is her diamond, which also looks great on her. Someone else I know has a tiny hand and a 2.5 carat diamond which looks like she's walking around with a tennis ball on her hand.

It all depends on what circles you travel in. What is acceptable in one is may not be in another. If she wears diamond earrings they should be bigger than that.
The diamond industry uses a 2 month salary rule, which I think is excessive, but since I had the money saved was close to what I spent.
A more important question to ask yourself is what is acceptable quality. The quality of the cut, color and clarity are very important.

Your diamond ring should be the equivalent cost of two months salary. My recommendation is to go for a better Clarity and cut stone, do not be as concerned with size, unless your girlfriend has made a point of saying she wants a really big stone. You can get big diamonds that are poor quality with inclusions and visable flaws for the same cost as you can get a smaller stone with more fire and better quality. It is a matter of what you consider important.
In my case I have a .62 ct. brilliant cut center stone of good quality. It is not huge, but it is a beautiful diamond due to better cut and clarity...it has a lot of fire/sparkle. My wedding band will be a custom made wrap of two .25 flawless diamonds on either side of the center cut....so even though my center stone is not huge, it will be accented by my wedding band and will be a unique, beautiful piece of jewelry.

What's acceptable is whatever's affordable. The cut can be whatever you want it to be. Trust your instincts. It should just hit you when you finally decide what ring to buy and she will love it.
