Well you've already admitted the offence in your question. If you had done that under caution then you'd be knack**** anyway!
At the end of the day, if you know you were speeding then why not just take the rap and learn from it? I did before I was in my present job and got caught by a camera.
However, if you really do want to try and 'get out of it' you can contest it and go to Court. This could have several outcomes:
You get away with it using your 'defence' as stated above.
You get a bigger fine and more points.
You get the standard £60 fine and 3 points
You get a £60 fine and a speed awareness course (good option as you avoid the points).
At the end of the day, it's actually quite easy to stick to the speed limit, I do it all the time ; )
May I suggest that you read an up to date copy of the highway code? It gives you all of the speed limits on the different types of road and ways of telling what the speed limit will be without seeing any signs, such as the distance between the lamp posts in a 30mph zone.

It seems Mummy pig has her speed limits all confused, never mind.
Was this the A556 up near manchester per chance?
Thats about the only 2 lane road( 2 lanes in each direction) I know of, how ever you have no excuse as the speed limit signs are very clearly posted.
You already admit you would have been over the limit, even if it had been a 70 limit.
Having not driven down the road before is about the worst excuse you can come up with, as you should be taking extra care, "clear fast road" also shows intent.
My best suggestion is take the 3 points and £60 fine, going to court will only increase the liklihood of more points and a bigger fine. unless of course you are already on 9 points, in which case you are in a mess and will have to go to court to beg for mercy to retain your licence

You can never do 70 on a 2 lane road,it's always a dual carrigeway with a partition in the middle,60 on a dual carrigeway, and where national speed limit sign shows on a 2 lane road the speed limit is 50. This is basic highway code, you should know this without having to see a sign telling you.

Go and look at the road you got caught on. If there are really obvious 50 mph signs then there is nothing you can do. But if the 50mph is obscured or there is no sign then you may have a case.
Unfortunately if you just missed the signs then it's your fault for speeding even if you didn't know the road and they will do you.

so far no one has suggested a way. Here are options. Take a photo of a 70 mph sign then put this on the same road then photo it . Explain your car had been stolen earlier but you had not noticed so not reported it. Tell them the police speed camera had not been checked earlier that day for acuracy so the reading cannot be confirmed. Speak to the Judge the night before or speak to a friend of his etc.

You haven't a leg to stand on. As it happens you've actually now admitted to exceeding the maximum speed permitted anywhere in the UK!
By the way, a Notice of Intended Prosecution is not a "ticket", nor is it a summons, it's just a warning to you that the offence may be considered for prosecution, so there's nothing to "get out of" yet.

You thought it was a "70" so you were doing "76". Nothing we can say could make this right. Ignorance of the law is no excuse. You crossed the line, so pay your fine.

they've got you over a barrel mate, nothing you can do. from what you've said, if you contest it, you'll lose - and have to pay the court fees as well.
you have my sympathies; the law does not respect people's judgement on the roads and its enforcement is mainly financially motivated. (hence cameras plaguing straight, flat, hazard free, un-pedestrianised 50mph dual-carriageways)
