I had gall bladder trouble a few years ago.I woke up with a severe griping pain under my right ribs.It got worse so I visited my doctor. He thought I might be constipated and prescribed some orange drink stuff, supposed to loosen you up.The pain persisted, I couldn't eat anything. About 5 in the afternoon I was violently sick and virtually collapsed with the pain. The doctor was called and he immediately sent for an ambulance to go to the A & E at the local hospital. They did various tests and I was still being sick. They admitted me and gave me strong painkillers. Two days later they operated and removed my gall bladder as it was badly infected and also my appendix which was starting to go gangrenous.I was in hospital a week, and it took a couple of months to recover. Sometimes extreme pain can be felt in the gall bladder but it is due to gall stones which can be removed ot dissolved without operating on the bladder itself. I am told the pain is very similar to an infected gall bladder so it is down to the skill of the surgeon to make a correct diagnosis and carry out the right course of treatment. Only your doctor or surgeon can determine the degree of urgency in any individual case.

usually you have right sided pain and they order and us or ct to rule out cholecystitis (gallstones). If indicated a cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) is done. I work in radiology and see this all the time. if you ever experience tremendous rt sided pain, go to ER immediately because chances are it is most likely something serious.
