You can teach him to tap a desk bell. Every time you go out, tap the bell..After a few times, tap the bell with his foot, and make a big deal out of it..Soon, he will be tapping the bell when he needs to go out..However, if you won't wake up from the sound of a desk bell, there is no way to show him how to wake you up..

Rather than letting the dog tell you when he has to go, it is much better for you to establish when he will go. I know that sounds weird and hard to do, but it's actually not.
Basically, all you have to do is take the dog out at the same times, every day.... and make sure one of those times is right before bed. It will make things easier for you and the dog as well.

You know, I have a 4+ yr old GSD and a 6 month old GSD, and they just seem to know to wake me up. They will either sit right by my head and whine, or they will lick my face. Now to teach them to whine to go out, I would say to crate the dog when you are asleep. They will get to where they do not want to pee in the crate, and will start to whine to get out of the crate. That is the easiest way I can think to do it

I never had that problem with my dogs once they were trained to ask to be let out, they made sure to wake me up in the night. Normally I took them out before I went to bed so they didn't bug me, You might just ask a veterinarian.

You don't say how old he is - most older dogs can hold it all night but if this is a real problem, the obvious answer is to move the kennel outside. (As long as the climate's not too harsh of course.)

My dog automatically tells me if he has to go, even when I'm sleeping.
Only thing was that I didn't train him to do it. He started doing it on his own.
