I do not allow my dogs a run of the house. Sorry but I love my dogs they are part of the family but I dont think dogs should be laying all over the bed & on the furniture it is a dog after all, I would not like a muddy dog running in & jumping on my sofa's etc so they have been taught from an early age they are not allowed in certain rooms, bathroom/bedroom hall or stairs
down stairs they can go in any room they want.

I've got a Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) and she has the run of the house. I trained her from a puppy, so she's very good about not tearing up things or messing on the floor. I can leave her alone for several hours and come home to her greeting me at the door, wagging her tail and happy to see me. I've heard that some dogs don't do so well with their freedom, and chew up the sofa and pee on the carpets, among other things. It might depend on the disposition of the dog or even which breed it is (some breeds are more excitable than others). Of course, we feel that our dog is part of the family, much like one of our kids. We take her camping and on long trips, going where we go. She travels very well, and sleeps with us in our pop-up camper too. The only time we banned her from certain rooms is when we were paper training her, restricting her to the kitchen, where it was easy to clean up any messes she made during her training. We love our Sheltie. <*)))><

I live in a large one bedroom apartment, and own 2 German Shepherds, one 4+ yrs old and the other is coming up on 6 months. When we first got the pup, he was not allowed in the bedroom without us because he would pee, and he didn;t just pee anywhere, he peed right in the middle of the bed. Took me a week to break him of that and now he knows that the bed is a place to sleep and he goes in there by himself all the time to sleep or play. So both my dogs are allowed to go where ever they want. They are not banned from any room. Would you ban a child from going to a room. If you did, do you know what would happen?

Mine are not allowed in any of the upstairs rooms not because they are destructive but because I don't want dog hairs or muddy paw prints on the beds.
Young dogs and pups are always kept where someone can keep an eye on them to ensure that they don't chew anything they shouldn't and very young pups are watched almost constantly so that there are no little 'accidents' while they are being house-trained.
The dogs have the run of the downstairs rooms and all have their favourite places during the day. In the evening they all pile on to one sofa and settle down to snooze or watch TV.

my dogs are not allowed upstairs at all and my cats are not allowed in the bedrooms, only on the landing spare room and bathroom. It has been known (although not very often) for dogs to fall on the stairs and damage their legs. Mine tripped down the garden steps and broke her leg! trust me prevention is better than the cure. It's good if they know the house though, mine have baths upstairs and sit with me in the bedroom to dry off, if there is ever a fire they need to know their way round.

She is allowed in the living room during the day because it's tiled, but banned from the rest of the house because there's expensive carpet there and she chews it if she gets the chance.

My Pitt is restricted from bedrooms and the bathroom...he's a mess in the bathroom cause he gets into the trash and my husband (still) hasn't learned how to put the toilet seat down so the dog drinks out of the toilet.........I know, GROSS! But on the bright side he doesn't get into the trash in the kitchen and he likes the cool floor so it's his favorite spot to be. You can tell by the 85 lbs. of dead weight he carries around! which brings me to the rooms...if he was allowed in the room at bed time we would be suffocated by the mass of dog trying to get in bed with us!

I have 2 dogs and they are allowed anywhere in the house. They are treated as part of the family. One of them sleeps on my bed, the other prefers to sleep downstairs on one of the dog beds but they are allowed on the furniture too. I put throws over so they can easily be washed.

We allow my dog to roam around the house. Sometimes when we try to keep him out of the bathroom he will start to whine because he just has to see us all the time if he can help it.
