Just gotta add one more thing. bleed the is right about basicaly everything, especially the first two not knowing what their talking about. the mpg for the gt 99-04 is 15 city and about 22 highway. thats with the 5 speed not the auto though. and the 1/4 mile times were actually pretty far off.
the 99-04 gt runs 0-60 in 5.5 and 1/4 mile in a very conservative 14.4. oh yeah and i have a 01 gt and before i ever did any mods to it, i got it to 150 on the interstate and thats without taking off said limiter. Also the 03 cobra has 0-60 times in the 4.5 range and quarter mile in the high 12's. And their bhp rating is stock at about 390. also i remember reading in muscle mustangs and fast fords a while back that there;s these two simple mods you can perform on a stock cobra that takes about an hour and you have it up to 500 bhp. i dont remember what the changes were, but they were pretty simple.
hope this helps

WOW, LET ME HELP!! There is so much incorrect information on the answer its amazing. I own a 2004 cobra and my brother is a svt technitian for Ford. First off, there is a speed limiter on both cars and its set at 155 for the cobra. Second there is a warrenty that comes with every cobra same as any other ford vehical. The only difference is that when you own a SVT vehical, any time you take your car to a Ford Dealership to get work done, you get a free rental car. Im glad the 1/4 mile times were corrected. The stock 03/04 cobras are faster then any STI stock. Per each companys web page, the 07 STi runs 13.1 quarter mile and the 04 cobra runs a 12.9. I spend alomst every weekend at the track and anyone there will tell you that this is correct. Stock vrs stock the cobras always out run the sti. What was said about the difference in engines was mostly correct. The only real error was that it was stated the 99-04 cobras came with a supercharged engine and 390bhp. That is incorrect. The 99-02 cobras did not have a supercharger. The roots type eaton supercharger is only on the 03-04 cobras. Thus the 03-04 cobras are the only ones with 390bhp. Another thing about the cobras 390bhp is that its very well known in all racing circles that Ford vastly underated the HP for the 03-04 cobras and on dyno's they get around 365-375 rwhp which translates to around 415-425bhp. The cobra's also have what is called a built short block engine. This means that the engine has forged internals and can withstand up to 800 to 1000 rwhp where the gts will throw rods at about 450-500rwhp. Because the 4.6 in the cobras are a 4v engine and the 4.6's in the GT's are a 2v engine (before 05, from 05 and later they are 3v) they both get around the same mpg. I am looking at my window sticker and my cobra gets 17/24. All cobras are manual they didnt make any auto cobra's in the years we are discussing. As stated the cobra's need very little to bring there hp to 500-550. By putting smaller supercharger pulley's on and cat back exhaust with a cold air intake filter you are there. All this can be done for around 1k. stock gt hp is 300 in 03/04 and 260 prior. There are also some small differences that the cobras have, fog lights, traction control, leather seats with suede inserts, 6 disk cd, different side view mirrors, different spoiler, different hood, much wider rims and tires. I could get more detailed and continue but I think I have written a novel. I hope I helped. I just looked up the 1/4 mile times for the stock sti and cobra on motor trend. 04 cobra 12.9 06 sti 13.3. Also as previously noted the cobras have independant rear suspension which helps a lot with cornering and overall comfort on poorly maintained roads. The GTs have a solid axle. Evan Smith for Fast fords and mustangs ran a 12.4 1/4 mile with a completely stock 04 cobra

Wow no one in the first 2 answers got any thing right.
Ok the difference the GT has a 4.6 liter single over head cam
good for 260hp for 99-04 or for 05 and up 300hp.
The SVT cobra has a 4.6 liter dual over head cam and also has a supercharger which puts out roughly 8-9psi of boost. bring the hp to 390 on the 99-04's I don't know about the 05 and up cause I don't like the body's. Both still have warranty's but the motor alone is enough to make up the price difference not to mention the different bumpers body pieces and the big stuff like rims, tires , brakes, and suspension that is all entry level racing.
On to mpg that is a lot in how you drive I have a GT 5 speed and I get about 12 mpg but I drive aggressive the ratings are
GT 15/19mpg and cobra 12/17mpg if I remember right.
But as I said there is alot in manual to auto and how you drive. As far as tuning well that is up to you they are all very tunable it doesn't really make a difference. I would have to say the most tunable is the 1986 to 1993 fox body mustang (the ones that look like escorts) If you can get past the body they are a great car for tuning but as far as recent years they make all the same parts for 99-04's as the do 05's and up so take your pick. By an STI you mean the Subaru wrx? if that's what you mean NO. An Sti runs high12's in the 1/4 mile stock and a GT runs a high 16 a cobra runs a low 15. so in a drag stock for stock no as for a GT there is no way I could follow one in the curves I have tried the rear end is lose and looses traction easy and if you have your traction control on your really going to spin out. The cobra might be better but you better have some $$$$$ ready. Get a cobra if you can afford it I couldn't so I got a GT.

Installing a turbo set up takes one of two routes- 1. You buy a quality kit, that has instructions and every thing you need. 2. You spend a lot of time doing research, fabrication and learning the hard way. Now the nice thing about going with choice one is that the complete project can be done in a day or two. The bad thing is that it costs a bunch of money. If I knew a supplier of a quality kit, I could give you the exact price. Now choice two is not so nice- it can take about a year of research to identify what turbo charger gives the AR ratio you need, figure out how to get enough fuel to the pistons, how to modify the ignition curve, where to place sensors for inlet air temp and pressure, and where to run all the plumbing. Then comes the fabrication and installation. When it is all set up- then the trouble shooting starts and this may take a few engines to get all the bugs worked out. So I suggest that you find a good Mustang Forum and see what others have tried. Maybe some one there will have done most of the work for you. There are also Mustang Magazines out there and on the internet, maybe one of them has an article on an installation. The above is as about a complete information as can be provided in this space.

A mustang GT is stock for common Ford dealerships. There are other dealerships that are allowed to sell the high end "racing" vehicals such as the Mustang SVT Cobra.

The advantage to the SVT is that it has no limiter placed on the vehical so it can do 150 mph. The downside is there is no warrenty (that's why not every Ford dealership pays the extra money to Ford to sell these things just to upset the customer that blows an engine while it leaves the dealership and then is told they have to pay to have it fixed). They are also more expensive.

The Mustang GT can maybe go 120 mph with the limiter. It's for people that want to look cool and not race. Then there is also the Ford GT 500 which might just be the racing version (uses the same engine as the GT 40 from what I read) for the new body style.

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
