A Pug? NFW!
The retriever is a fantastic animal: gentle, playful, devoted, great with kids, will generally alert ou to strangers coming to your door and generally keep a watchfl but non agressive ee on things. However, they need a yard to play in, lots of exercise and physical and mental challenges. They can be difficult to train. They are large dogs, will eat a lot, take up space, possible step on and break things-so keep everything you value off the floor and end table, coffee tables etc. That tail can clear a coffeetable when tthey get excited. Finally, of course, they shed more that your other two choices and are subject hyp disorders..
The Cocker Spaniel is probably the best choice of the three in general buecause they are not that big, yet a most definitely real dogs, they are devoted, playful, loving easy to train. CS's won't accidently step on and break something are not typically subject hip disorders.
In the end it is a matter of preference, even within the breed each dog's personality is different.
Good Luck

Pugs are the most fantastic comedians, they are great fun to live with and have bags of personality.
Goldens are also beautiful dogs (I grew up with one), really gentle but do suffer from being blond (sometimes not the sharpest tool in the box). My one couldn't have been a better companion to grow up with.
Personally I would steer well clear of cockers (all the cocker lovers will hate me now). I work in a big animal shelter and the vast majority of cockers that we see have some pretty serious aggression problems. Generally the problems are status and possession problems so they might steal something and hide under a table and then bite anyone who tries to get it off them.
Most often it is the solid colour (particularly red) ones that are the most problematic. The frequency of the problem is to the extent that when I see a new one has arrived at the shelter the first thing I check is were the previous owners able to take things (food/toys) away from the dog. The vast majority couldn't.
There will be some cockers that are absolutely fine and are really lovely dogs to live with but the ones who are naughty are very naughty. Owners are so often shocked because they are such beautiful looking dogs that they do not expect their dog to behave like that.
We generally only rehome cockers to very confident, experienced people who are capable of dealing with controlling, strong-minded dogs and have a history of working through problem behaviour.

I would say a Golden Retriever because they are sweet, well behaved and just completly beautiful. That is not all but I would say that you should do more research on this dog to make sure that this is the dog that you want. They are very good dogs to my knowledge but choose whatever you feel would be the best dog for you.

Having been a dog groomer for many years and in many parts of the country, my own prejudice is: get any breed other than a Cocker Spaniel. Ever since the 1950's they have been over-bred, and often carelessly bred, to the detriment of both their health and their personalities.
While many Cockers are sweet and docile, fellow groomers and I have been bitten by them more often than by any other breed. They have a lot of jaw pressure.
They are prone to ear infections (both bacterial and fungal) because of the floppy ears that don't allow air circulation to the ear canal. They are often touchy about their feet, making nail clipping hazardous to the groomer. Their nails are thick and tough, and don't wear down easily. I've seen cocker nails that have grown into a complete circle because the owner didn't notice the nails growing long under all that hair. The hair is another problem. Unless you brush the dog several times a week (from the skin out), it mats. De-matting is another opportunity to get a painful bite, so we often refused to groom matted Cockers unless the owner agreed to have all the hair clipped off rather than brushed out. To keep their coats in reasonable condition, they need to be clipped about every six weeks.

Cocker Spaniel! Definitely. Like you Aries, I am assertive and lively. This comely, friendly breed is a big dog in a small dog body. My spaniel Razz is sweet and gentle with children, loves to play and cuddle is not destructive, is housebroken and loves to go for a walk or a ride. She eats dry food, about a cup and a fourth a day. She is my closest confidant :) bright, funny and easily trained. Enjoy your new Cocker! I know you'll be pleased! :)

Cocker spaniels are a tad moody but awesome dogs.I've owned one. They're great companions. Golden retrievers are very gentle and protective of their families. I'd go with the retriever.

If you want personality-plus then you want a Pug! They are the clowns of the dog world. Our Pug, Chun Mee (Chinese for precious eyebrows) brings so much laughter and entertainment into our lives. She has a great sense of humor and gets into all kinds of funny predicaments. My daughter calls me and the Pug, Lilo and Stitch, because we are always up to something. In addition to being fun to play with, they are also intuitive and gentle and loving. They sense what is going on with you and will try to meet your needs. Everyone loves a Pug, they are so famous and recognizable! One funny thing Chun did last Christmas: our family eats sushi on Christmas Eve, we're Japanese, and my Mom had this beautiful selection laid out. We were waiting for one more guest, and Chun leaped up and grabbed a sushi and gobbled it down. It was so cute, we will never forget it. They are the same size as a baby and are just great to cuddle. Best of luck to you in finding your doggy soul mate!!
