merkava is designed to be crew-protecting.
it has bottom escape hatch,
it does have a compartment for a three(?) men of other crew whose armor was disabled
placing engine into the front protects the crew front fire. /abrams does heave rear mounted engine./

What most people forget that no machine can run without a crew and a crew is a lot more valuable then any equipment. The Merklava was built to keep the crew alive. The engine is built in front of the crew and a back escape door for the crew to get out of the tank. The Abrams have one great advantage over the Merklava,Speed & Range. The heavy armor and deisal engine of the Merklava is slower and dose not go as far as the Abrams and its jet turbine engine.

No matter the capability's of either tank, more often than not the "human factor" decides who wins. The people behind the equipment, how well they were trained, how well they applied them selves to that training, and even a little luck can go a long way as well. But hey, we are on the same side.

Because the Merkava was built around crew survivability. Israel has had a long time to improve because of their relevant position whereas the US hasn't really fought urban warfare with tanks since WW2
