Nascar says they may evaluate the way they qualify. Hopefully they mean the top 35 lock-in. How many spots should be locked in to protect the top sponsors? Should any? What would you do?

I would do top 25 in points and I would have the go or go home cars either go at the end or the beginning together instead of straggled out all over, eliminate the championship provisional and add more cars to the race.

First and foremost, do away with the Past Champions Provisional. Just because you were great 10 years ago, doesn't mean you're good enough to race today. (My apologies to the sentimental favorites - sometimes, it's best just to move on.)

Secondly, increase the number of starting positions to 44 or decrease to 42 - a nice, even number (the 43rd spot was for the Past Champions Provisional anyway).

Thirdly, award points for qualifying. They're already getting more points for wins this season. You could make it the inverse of their qualifying position and give a bonus for the pole. (1st = 43 points + 5 points, 43rd = 1 point)

This will make it more competitive for the go or go homers, who concentrate on quailfying every week. The "protected" entries will always go for the points, since it's all about getting to the chase.

Fourth - If you're going to protect a car/driver and guarantee them a spot in the field, then it should be the top car for each team (granted, there are a few teams that only have one car) inside the top 35 in points. They still have to qualify, but are guaranteed a starting position, be it 1st or 43rd.

The rest should qualify on time.

Alternately:

If you're going to protect the entire top 35, let them qualify on time.

Then qualify the go or go homers - have a "B" main after qualifying - like a ten-lap dash at a short track, with the starting positions based on their qualifying time. The top 8 make the race, filling in the last 8 or so spots and the remainder go home.

As a longtime fan of NASCAR, I am disappointed at how corporate and politically correct this sport has become over the years. It's barely about the racing anymore...there are too many rules, regulations, people to please, etc., for racing to be the focus these days. My belief is that everyone who shows up should be allowed to qualify, all drivers should be required to qualify in race trim, and the fastest 43 drivers should be in the race, period. I don't believe there should be any consideration for former champions, sponsors, favorite/popular drivers, owner points, etc. The drivers in any particular race should be there based on their current performance and not on their past accomplishments.

Yes, fans might be upset if their favorite drivers miss a race and a few big sponsors may not be happy if their driver doesn't qualify, but the media coverage of either of those events would more than make up for the exposure the driver/sponsor would receive if he/they were in the race. Also, this would make the sport more competitive and keep the teams and the drivers "hungry," so to speak, which can only make for better racing in the end.

I don't think the top 35 owners points is a good system. Last week Michael Waltrip didn't make the race although he was faster than some of those who did qualify. If it weren't for owner points, we'd never see Kyle Petty would we? Fair is fair, the fastest 43 cars should be the ones in the race.

I'm ok with past champion provisionals, but only 4 a year and they can't be used in back to back races.

Lock in the top 20. Let the rest qualify together. Before or after the top 20. Increase the field size. ( a lot of tracks would have to increase pit spaces) let the top 20 crew chiefs vote on when they qualify before or after the go or go home guys.

They need provisionals for the current years winners ( if you win your locked in), and past champions. (because die hard race fans want to see their driver, they pay money to get in just like every body else.)

Baby boy Brian France has turned Nascar into a bunch of sissy, race into the show, have 10 lap shutouts just like at local tracks and if you win the main event, you start at the back next week. gives everyone a chance for clean air not get caught up in the 1st lap crash

no, i think it should all be based on what they time in at. sponsers are going to keep sponsering no matter what. look at the sponsers that aren't getting a tv time because their driver can't race even tho they timed in faster than drivers who got in due to owner points. the playing field definately needs to be more even.

also, if anyone noticed last weeks race, i think all the drivers who dnq including Mike Waltrip would have been able to race based on what their qualify time was and the last 6 drivers or so would not have been able too, how is that fair?

No spots locked in,no free passes,no provisionals.
The FASTEST 43 race.
If someone does not quailify then they just try next week.
