There are two ways that I like to interpret this.....
Someone treats you like that you have the personal choice to turn and walk away without causing a scene that would force both parties to basically lose their dignity....
The more profound interpretation has to do with forgiveness....
If you have truly forgiven someone, you dont worry that they will strike you again - you have totally erased that from your mind - so you would not worry about giving the other cheek to them....
Its powerful stuff if you think about it

The Jesus of Matthew often does not sound like the same person in later books of the New Testament.

That is one side of Roman Catholicism, the other side is justice. Jesus Christ is a just God and will now tolerate weakness in any form. If you read the Acts of the Apostles, you will surely be inspired of the bravery of God's workers. Standing on their belief even in the face of death. Not just allowing themselves to be trampled upon by the wicked.

Well, He is our example, correct? When He stood before the Sanhedrin, and they were all accusing Him falsely, the bible said He opened not His mouth.

I have found I am not as good at defending myself (because that's exactly what I'm doing...being defensive) as God is in being my advocate. When I trust in Him, things have always worked out, even if I had to keep my mouth shut when I wanted to say a few things....!

It's been my experience that if you are wrongly accused, and give the situation to God, He will work it out better than you ever could.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

well, we all just need to stop hitting each other. you should change the question to "why do we hurt each other"

yeah. that's about it. and if someone does offend you.. why the hell does it matter.. they've done it... even if you hurt them back.. they've already done it. if you choose not to react.. good for you.. a lot of people need to work on that in this world..

The Spirit of truth will stand up for us just like She did for Elijah. We are supposed to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.

If someone hits you on your cheek, you don't need to consult a book to determine the response to it. Decide on your own. Think for yourself!
