The first thing you need to do is make a list of the personality traits you are looking for in a dog. When you take on ownership of a living thing, it is often a committment of over 15 years with a small dog. Are you gone long periods of time during the day? Do you have a yard that is fenced? Are there other people in the home and do they want a dog as well? Do you have small children? Are any of them allergic? Do you have the time to train and take care of the animal? Do you like high energy or lap behavior? Once you have answered all of these questions you can begin looking for the right dog for your lifestyle. Keep in mind that small breed dogs need maintenance just like large breed dogs. They still need play time, walks, grooming, etc. Also, smaller breed dogs go to the bathroom more frequently, so if you are gone alot, this may not be for you. The internet and breed books can give you some very good information on traits and personalities so you can match the breed to your personality. Good luck with your choice!

A Mini dachshund though the standards rock!

If raised and socialized properly ( ie NOT allowed to completely take over the household within five minutes of arrival and enjoy a triumphant decades long megalomanic reign though it may do that anway) you will enjoy being owned by a charming intelligent animal who will act as both a guard and lap dog!

Regardless of what dog breed you acquire train the dog at an early age to accept and continue to accept you as the responsible alpha of your family/pack and slowly but gently socialize the dog by introducing it to a variety of different situatioons and ages and sizes of other dogs and humans.

Be warned the minis are hounds with terrier traits ... they may fixate on certain toys or furnishings and will try to hunt!

On no account copy that professional "stupid girl" as Pink put it, Paris Hilton, and get a chichihua just cos they're small and cute.

A more ethical thing to do if you cant afford to go to a good breeder who breeds for stable personalities and not looks would be to get an older rescue dog, pure or cross breed, who needs a good home!

Contact the local / state association /society for your breed and make sure the breeder is reputable.

If buying from a pet store make sure they buy from reputable breeders and not puppy mills!

Chihuahua
Yorkshire Terrier
Pug
Maltese
Shih-Tzu
Toy Poodle
Pomeranian
Dachshund
Lhasa Apso
Papillon
Japanese Chin
Miniature Pinscher (Min Pin)
Miniature Schnauzer
Miniature Poodle
Pekingese
Australian Silky Terrier

Are all small breeds. They each require their own amount of maintenance and exercise. Remember that small breeds are prone to a LOT of health problems and some don't have a cute temperament to match their cute looks. Research thoroughly before deciding to buy a small breed.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "TEACUP" ANYTHING! There is also no such thing as "TOY" or "MINIATURE" dogs, with the exception of the above AKC recognized Toy or Miniature breeds.

Oh where to start!! I love chihuahuas, poodles (toy), pomeranians, yorkies, mini dobermans, etc. too many to list. I only suggest that you research the breeds and get to know as much as them as you can. Then make an educated decision on which would suite you best. For Ex: Lots of toy poodles have allergies (gets costly), Yorkies tend to bark alot (worth your sanity?) Jack Russells tend to be very hyper. Just research before you buy. You don't want to end up with a puppy you won't be happy with.

A little dachshund! I have 3 doxies and just love this breed. When my children were young we had dachshunds also. They love their family, very loyal, and very very loving. My red doxie is 6 1/2 pounds, she is the sweetest dog I have ever owned. My other dogs are males and such loving guys, they weigh 12 and 14 pounds. All of mine are smooth haired, my cousin has two long haired dachshund. They have same traits as mine but their hair catches leaves and needs freq brushing.
You can not go wrong with dachshunds, you will fall in love with this breed.

a million. Pomeranians and poodles are fluffy. 2. All dogs are very, very, very lovable and worthwhile. 3. bypass to the AKC website, and seem at dogs less than the toy crew. 4. All dogs are liable to getting ill. All breeds have their own genetic and health issues that responsible breeders are operating to eliminate. you should detect a good breeder in case you pick one a lot less liable to getting ill. 5. Small dogs and little ones do no longer blend. Small dogs will be terrified of little ones and develop into protective. in case you pick a dogs respectful to little ones, are not getting a small dogs. Small dogs can surely be harm with the help of little ones, by chance. 6. a large number of dogs imagine they're lap dogs, like to be held, and bypass for vehicle rides. although, this isn't with the help of breed. it really is with the help of the dogs's personality. some small dogs don't like being held and would fairly run round. 7. All dogs like to be spoiled. 8. Why do you pick a dogs with a lovable bark? 9. Any dogs will be "vicious". If scared, they could teach their enamel. it really is something that you, as a dogs proprietor, favor to coach the dogs no longer to do. Socialization is taken under consideration necessary. 10. Small dogs are in many circumstances going on for being not undemanding to housebreak. 11. You advise a dogs like a Pomeranian? they have short legs. i'd advise you re-evaluate the characteristics you're searching for in a dogs. Small dogs and little ones do purely no longer bypass mutually. it really is totally major to detect a responsible breeder if going with a purebred dogs. Please do no longer fall for those "dressmaker", "hybrid" dogs. those are fancy names for mutts. No good breeder would ever deliberately produce mutts. assisting someone who does is purely assisting irresponsible breeding practices.

theres more than 50 small purebreeds and thousands of small crosses.

what type are you looking for? personality? long/short haired?

dont get a "teacup" anything. Teacup is just a name given to the runt of the litter it is not a breed or any type of dog.. they are usually unhealthy and prone to problems. there are also no size regulartions, so it could actually be bigger than a miniture.
most "teacups" are actually "Toys".
breeders will give new names to anything in a bid to sell them to people who dont know any better.
