Within (as someone already so aptly put) and without. Only when you go without can you truly discover what lies within. Try some detachment experiences. Come face to face first with the boundaries of the mind and body. When we come to understand and accept them we can traverse uncharted territory. Spiritual enlightenment wears many faces and is different for all. The pathways will test your resolve and build your spirit. Physical places are limited in scope. Spiritual journeys are metaphysical and transcend both time and space. If your commitment is genuine, your path will reveal itself.

Reflect on what you respond best to. Some people experience God in solitude and others through service to others and others through the beauty of nature. I don't believe that God is more present in one place than another but certain circumstances can help you be more aware of the presence of God. Pray and ask those closest to you. I stayed in a convent for a year as part of a volunteer program although I'm not Catholic (Now I am no longer Christian either but that's a different story.) and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I was truly touched by God.

My parents went on a tour of the holy land with a group. They said that it was really something to stand in one place and read in both the old and the new testement what had happened there. They said it was like reading the bible before had been watching a black and white tv, and now that they can picture it in thier minds it was like a color hd tv. If possible try to get a Christian based tour, and a really good Christian guide!

Lourdes is a place that Catholics pilgrimage to adore Mary. This very fact disqualifies Catholics from being classified as Christian. I challenge you to give evidence that Jesus specifies that Mary, or saints, is the alternate way to the Father. Sorry for shocking you. By the way, I believe in God, but in no religion. They are all flawed and man-made nonsense derived from ignorance and paganism.

In the Bible it says that salvation comes from within. This means that you can be as close to God if you were stranded on a desert island than if you were in Lourdes at a convent.

a convent would be nice. You could enjoy the quiet, or you can go worship with the nuns and other visitors. You might want to consider going to a charismatic church if you want to see the louder side of worship with a lot of 'praise the Lord' and 'Amen'!
There is a convent in Cullman, Alabama

Go to your prayer closet.
There is nothing in the Bible about jet - set travel and a religious experience.
