we just bought a dodge caliber. Its really nice. stay away from kia though, most all of them are junk. hyndai are actually pretty good cars, and so are nissan. We had a subaru years ago and it was the best little car ever, wish we never would have gotten rid of it! anyways the dodge caliber has 5 star ratings on all sides, and it gets great mileage. The ride is so smooth it feels like an expensive luxery car, but they only start off at 18,000. It's a great buy, and its cheap!
and to correct lakeguy, honda and toyota are both US companies. Toyota is manufactured here with US parts, and honda is manufactured here with foriegn parts...

We just bought two new ones and love them both. A Hyundai Sonata and a Saturn Aura. The Sonata costs about $7,500 less than a Camry or Accord and beats them hands down in every category. It also has a 100,000 mile warranty and is fast and fun to drive.
The Aura is similar to the Pontiac G-6 but a bit more refined. It is based on a German design and recently was named mid size car of the year. GM has now also adopted the 100,000 mile warranty, by the way. I can honestly recommend both.
If you're looking for a smaller car, check out the Ford Focus hatchback or the Mazda 3. Both are quality, well equipped even at base model, and very stylish.
imo, Toyota and Honda bank on their name and do little for consumers on the dealer end because they know people are pre-programmed to buy them. They hardly offer any incentives, whereas both Hyundai and GM gave us cash back incentives of $1,500. The dealers are not arrogant like Honda dealers either. Don't get me wrong, Toyota and Honda make good cars. It's just that these days GM and Hyundai are just as good. So why pay more?

Do you know anything about Honda or Toyota, or just want one because "Everyone loves them, they're the best"
Chances are, you don't know much about cars (no offense) but American cars are just as good. Check out the new Ford Fusion which the majority of 600 people choose over Honda and Toyota.
Toyota and Honda overprice their car, and they always rust after a few years, but if you really want a car that will last you 200,000 miles (sometimes) Honda would be the best bet

Look for something small and DIESEL. VW TDi engines are really quiet and get 40-50mpg IN TOWN!. You can make your own Diesel fuel when the world runs out of gas, and Diesel engines last a LOT longer than gasoline engines.
I had a 85 Peugeot diesel (yes, I live in the USA) it got me 40mpg on the freeway at 80mph!
OH, and a diesel tune-up is oil, fuel and air filters only. NO spark plugs, wires, o2 sensors to pay for.

Avoid japanese, chinese and Korean cars like the plague. The resale values and market on them are about to fall through the floor. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, and Hyundai/Kia are all on dangerous financial ground. Regardless of what COnsmer Reports says, they are garbage throw-away cars, that are way too expensive, and are all pig ugly.
