My dearest friend has been dealing with bouts of depression. He is unsure of what they are caused by. He will have a perfectly great moment then suddenly without any outside trigger he plummets into a depression that could last a couple of hours of up to a week, then he will be fine again for a couple of days. He doesnt know why this occurs and when it does I find it that not irritating him with questions and allowing him to snap out of it is the best course, but I want to help him overcome this bouts. Please Help.

This appears to me like manic depression and this is a medical condition that requires therapy or medication. I suggest you at least take him to the doctor's.

In addition, you can try healing to complement treatment.

Meditation helps a lot, i suggest go to meditation center and get a good guru to help you out.

Good luck.

He needs to see a counselor. There is a kind of therapy called CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) that is just as effective as medication for treating depression, and lasts longer after treatment stops. There could be other issues at play, so seeing a counselor will also help him to sort those out. He can just yahoo or google "counseling" and the name of the city he lives in. Almost all qualified counselors (masters degree and above) are familiar with treating depression. Though shopping around for someone he feels comfortable with is a good idea if the first one or two aren't a good match.

You've got a lucky friend.

This sounds like more than just Depression, your dearest friend needs to talk with his family doctor so he can refer him to someone who can help. I want to point this out just because your depressed you don,t have to take anti-depressants. Because all these new medicines that have hit the market, I,m starting to believe that people are thinking Oh, I have all those symptoms. We are now being ruled by the medical society and it needs to stop. All these unnecessary medications are being prescribed and the side effects are outstanding, we are putting ourselves in more danger in the long run. So please just talk to your doctor and you be the judge of what you feel and maybe you will be able to find out what,s triggering the depression. It is most likely something that you never would dream of.

Exercise and healthy diet is a start. Most medications for depression can be replaced with 15-30 minutes of walking daily. Yay endorphins!

Your friend should see a doctor though to make sure it isn't something else, like a hormonal imbalance or whatever.

First of all, it is quite normal to be sad from time to time. It's part of the human condition.

Does his depression cause him to not be able to do anything?

If these bouts are truly having an adverse effect on his life, he should see a highly recommended therapist -- no matter what the financial cost.

the herb valerian is very good to take when stressed, you can buy it at local heath stores such as gnc and some pharacies also carry it. this is a non-habit forming way to overcome bouts of depression, anxiety and things of that nature. i have used it on a daily baisis during times of stress and it helps.

There's isn't enough info about him to give you advice. Does he drink? Drugs? How's his family situation? He should see a professional. That doesn't mean he's going to have to take anti-depressants. Talk therapy, among other things, has an effective track record.

Good luck!

He should probably still see his family doctor about this... there are a couple of natural remedies he could try, like
SAM-e. Look for it in WalMart or a pharmacy... get the "Mood Plus" SAM-e for best results.... HOWEVER, if he is suffering from bipolar disorder, antidepressants have a higher possibility of making him feel suicidal.... he really, really should ask a doctor about this... Good luck!
