You don't say what format the scanned objects are in.

When I scan as OCR to a Word document, it can be sent as an attachment, or after saving the Word document, select all and copy/paste into the message box.

If I scan a picture to jpg, you can try inserting it in the message box but not all programs allow this - so again, send as an attachment.
