I know several people that this has happened to. The skin is not darker all over the body, but just in certain areas like behind the neck and the underarm area. Its a condition called acanthosis nigricans which is often associated with obesity.

I hadn't heard that.

I can imagine that an overly skinny person who gains a bit of weight might be more willing to expose his or her body to sunlight & public view and consequently darken the complexion.

No its not true..if someone gains weight their complexion would only get lighter as there skin would stretch more and thus it would only look lighter than darker.
