Currently I have a 289 and a three speed manual that run great, and They've been in the car ever since It was new. But its all original except some seals and a new carb and intake. Its never been rebuilt and its starting to show its age a little smoke and some new leaks. Well, since I like to do crazy things to my cars I was wondering what was the most interesting swap I could do. The car only weighs 3400 pounds so I was thinking I could have a little fun and put a 3.8 Sc and a T5 out of a Thunder-bird SC in it or find an engine and trans out or a newer Mercury Marauder. I know the engine out of the Tbird would make it haul because I had a 89 XR7 with the same engine and that car hauled and it weighed 500 pounds more than this car would weigh. But just looking to see what every body Else thinks. Thanks for you ideas.

My 289 has less power all around than the 3.8 SC. The Galaxie also whieghs less than the car it would be coming from and anyways the cars sort or a resto-mod anyways

Also The 3.8 SC has more Torque than my 289 by quite a bit (315 at 3500 rpm)

Ok because almost everyone seams to think that it is a bad idea to put a modern power plant in an old ride. How about just gettin a Tk5 manual to replace the old 3 speed manual and rebuild the old 289?

You're going to need an engine with a lot more torque to make your Galaxie haul. A 3.8 SC won't do the trick for a 3400 lb. car. I suggest going to at least a 351ci Ford Cleveland. You may even want to look at a 390 cu Ford. The engine you are currently thinking about maybe have the horsepower, but lacks the torque; which will make your car really go.

How about a 460 twin Turbo? I know a guy that put one in a 64 Galaxie. But seriously, a 390 is a direct bolt in for your car, the motor mounts will bolt to the stock frame mounts. And putting a C-6 behind it would be a great way to go. You could always get a four speed since you already have the clutch setup.
Good luck!

I like the idea of the SC drivetrain just because it's different. You may also consider a 32 valve 4.6 V8 out of a Lincoln Continental or Mark 8. It would look great under the hood plus they have more power then the regular 16 valve 4.6. This would give you better performance then the SC setup and would still be somewhat different. I would also think this engine trans combo would be easier to come by then a complete SC driveline.

Since you are asking for opinions, I'll give you mine, why not just get another 289 or a 302 and put it in there and play with that and take the orginial motor and rebuild it. That way when you are ready to get ride of it, you can put the orginial motor back in and sell it as an orginial number matching auto? I know 65 Galaxie's aren't the most coveted auto's in the world, but they are starting to gain some value.
Your car and your call, but you did ask, and that's my 2 cents worth. good luck.

Personally I would rather replace the 289/3 speed with a 351/C6 transmission or a 4 speed manual or also a 390/C6 transmission or a 4 speed manual or I would also go for the 428/C6 transmission or a 4 speed manual.

That engine/trans combo will work fine, be sure to get all the computer and engine harness stuff that goes with it!
But, why do you want to wreck the Galaxies vintage Karma with the modern engine?
Just slap a set of straight pipes on it, with NO crossflow pipe (read: true stereo duals) and smallish diameter 1.75" pipe for a good crackley sound when just cruising thru the gears.

I would suggest putting in an engine with more torque. My 1964 Ford Galaxie has a 352 that hauls (I am currently rebuilding w/ edelbrock manifold, carb, cam)THe FE block ford engines are known for having excellent torque with thier size.
