Well, I am not exactly sure, because I wasn't there. I have a feeling that he had a mind blowing experience that some people call cosmic consciousness, enlightenment, whatever you might want to call it. Many people have experienced such states of consciousness, and it's actually very well documented in a book called Cosmic Consciousness, by Richard M. Bucke M.D. So, Jesus had this experience, and was trying to convey this to the people around him in the language and context of the Hebrew culture.
I guess it really depends on what Jesus meant by "son of God," checking my resources, no one really knows. I find it hard to believe that this was a literal statement in the terms of today. I don't think that Jesus was some kind of child of an old man "upstairs" because it just seems absurd. Now, if I look in the old testament, I find similar terms like "sons of men" which seems to refer to humanity or the human race. The phrase, "sons of God" is mentioned in the old testament (Genesis 6:2 and 4) and it seems logical to infer that a "son of god" meant something to the extent of "of the nature of the Divine" rather than having more of a literal meaning. Of course, I am not an authority on the subject, so you can take my opinion or leave it. I just thought I would put my two cents in.

It was not on earth that Jesus knew He was the Son of God. Jesus has always been the Son of God. Jesus was born as the Son of God and before being born, He was the Son of God in Heaven.

Jesus was not god's "son". He was an anti-slavery activist and organizer, guided by god as was Spartacus who lost all of his followers to crufixion. Learn more at : http://www.angeloftruth.com
