Mahavatar Babaji is the name given to an Indian yogi and holy man by Lahiri Mahasaya and several of his disciples who met Mahavatar Babaji between 1861 and 1935. Some of these meetings were described by Paramahansa Yogananda in his book Autobiography of a Yogi, including a first hand telling of Yogananda’s own meeting with Mahavatar Babaji. Another first hand account was given by Sri Yukteswar Giri in his book The Holy Science. All of these accounts, along with additional meetings with Mahavatar Babaji, are described in various biographies of those mentioned by Yogananda.

Mahavatar Babaji’s real name and date of birth are not known, so those who met him during that period all called him by the title first given to him by Lahiri Mahasaya. ‘Mahavatar’ means ‘great avatar’, and ‘Babaji’ simply means ‘revered father’. Some of the encounters included two or more witnesses — discussions between those who met Mahavatar Babaji indicate that they all met the same person.

Since Yogananda’s accounts first appeared in his autobiography, published in 1946, many people have claimed visions or encounters with a person who they believed was the same Mahavatar Babaji. There is no way to confirm if these meetings were actually with the same person described by the witnesses between 1861 and 1935.

Shri Haidakhan Babaji is a great spiritual teacher who was living in Haidakhan, India, from 1970 to 1984. To all who came there to visit him from many different countries of the world, He gave the same message:

Truth, Simplicity, and Love
Karma Yoga (service to humanity)
Japa Nam (repeating God's Name)

Babaji requests that human beings become humane and treat each other kindly. He says we are approaching a very critical time, which he calls the "MahaKranti: Great Revolution." This revolution will be experienced as a purification for those who have the Name of God in their hearts and are practicing the principles of Truth, Simplicity, and Love. For those who have not purified themselves before the Revolution, it can mean total destruction.

Srila Gaurakisora babaji lived on madhukari, begging and slept beneath a tree. He would lie prostrate, offering his humble obeisances to the residents of Vraja, considering them as embodiments of Lord Krsna. He even offered his obeisances to the flowers, trees, and land around him. He spent about thirty years at Vraja mandala serving the deities there. Afterwards, perhaps by the direction of the Supreme Lord, he left for Navadvipa.
