If you have ever taken nortriptyline, what were/are your side effects? If you didn't have any side effects, does it really help to improve depression?

Dry mouth and constipation are the most frequent side effect. But side effects don't affect everyone to the same extent. Therefore you have to take it yourself to see whether you will get that particular side effect or not.

Side effect and the effectiveness of the medication are 2 different things. There are not related to each other.

If side effect is a problem, there are newer generations of anti-depressant drugs that are more effective and give you less side effects. The key is to see the right health care professional so they can guide you through the many newer anti-depressant drugs that are out on the market already.

I took it for quite a while. It worked just fine, and I didn't experience any side effects, which is something I can't say about the Elavil I took first. That nearly drove me crazy with constipation! They changed me to Nortriptyline and that fixed it.

It causes mouth dryness and eventually your teeth rot , except if you have an exceptionally good oral hygiene . Also the decreased saliva and dry mouth might make it easier for you to CHOKE , even on stuff that is normally easy to swallow .

It causes a rapid heart beat .

I gained almost 20 kilos because of it over 1 year . After taking it 30 minutes , you feel like you must eat something , even if you had just eaten before that .
Yes it does help , it's great even in small doses . However you must take "vacations" like 2 days off , without the drug , so you never become tolerant , which might cause you to need higher doses .

They whacked me out. They prescribe it for severe pain too which is why I took it.

Nasty stuff.

Try Wellbutrin. It doesn't mess with your hunger or sex drive. It doesn't whack you out either. Only side effect is a headache if you miss a dose.

Had Paxil, and Prozac. Paxil made me psychotic, Prozac destroyed my sex drive.
