Just because I can't respond to my own question (" Why being an atheist is so badly perceived in the U.S.? " that is): as an atheist I don't name people names and I don't tell them that if they believe in God they're wrong and they deserve something bad to hapen to them. I'm from Europe and tere, people are not so agressive about this, so I just posted the question because I really have a hard time understanding Ameicans...

IF you are referring to hell according to the bible then you must include the Lord of the Bible. The Lord of the Bible doesn't want anyone to go to hell. That's why he sent His Son. According to the Bible the only way to the Father in Heaven is through faith in what the Son did in His life death and resurrection.

Now the Lord is more of a gentleman than many Christians and He won't force you to believe in Him. He gives you the
power of the choice to believe or not to believe.

One thing for sure is that he would rather die for you than live without you.

Everyone deserves Hell not just you. But, God give his only son so that we could saved through him. Being an atheist is horrible no matter where you are in the world. Hopefully you will change your ways and accept Christ before its too late.

Touche' !
But...
then why are you here in the religion & spirituality section?

Hell should be of no concern to you (heaven too for that matter) if you do not believe in God.

With a belief in God comes the concept(s) of heaven and hell. In the case of Christians, we believe that all mankind is doomed to hell EXCEPT those who look to Jesus Christ as being their Lord and Savior.

I'm a believer and according to God's own word I'm to work out my own salvation with fear and trembling, which simply means to me that I can screw up just as bad as an atheist and wind up in hell for entirely different reasons. Self-righteousness wouldn't make it any less wrong for me to be there than you, it just means that as a believer I'm going to judged alot harsher than you, so I try very hard not to complain about the splinter in your eye when I have an entire tree stuck in mine.

Greetings from a non-judgemental American believer.

if there is an afterlife then as an atheist you are unprepared for it. so you are pretty much afloat in the flotsam and jet sum of eternity and earned your fate because of ignorance.not that you are evil but that you are unprepared and lost in the grand scheme of things. its not personal, its karma.ignorance is not bliss./ btw,i take a Buddhist POV/ good luck, i wish you well

Tony, I hate to admit this, but many of us Americans are rude @ssh0les. We think we have a right to say horrible things to people, just because we have the right of free speech.

I apologize on behalf of all those who who didn't mean to offend you. Please try not to judge us all by the actions of the religious.

If you had cancer and I knew of the cure, would you want to know it?

It's the same with God, I know how to get to heaven thanks to God in the Holy Bible. We all deserve to go to hell, but the Bible tells us how to avoid that and be forgiven. Would you want to avoid hell and be told or just not be told and go to hell?
