Empower your children to overcome their fears.
There are many bumps in the night. Some are real, and some are imagined.
Purchase a tape recorder. Hand it to your child. Instruct them to begin recording when they hear the footsteps.
After you review this evidence, you will know if it justifies your staying awake and losing sleep to verify the source of the mystery sounds.
So maybe there are noises ......if so....offer to camp out in the childs room.......but only for 2 nights.....when they hear the noise they are allowed to awaken you. Maybe you can pinpoint the source. Possibly you can head for the attic when you hear the noise.
Just remember ..... this is not a cause to celebrate their fears, or increase them.....it is their chance to find an answer to this great noisy mystery.
With a little creativity, you can resolve this, and the children can begin sleeping sweetly again.

Is it really foot steps --- like some one actually walking around? Or just house settling sounds (creaking and popping sounds).
After checking for all other sound sources ---- bird, mice or animal that may have gotten in the attic --- and ruling them out if none are found, it could be just the house settling.
Also it might just be the change in air temperture where you live. The heat of the day then the cold of the night causing the wood frames and beams expanding and contracting making the sounds. (I guess you could classify that as house settling).
Lastly, if none of the above are found have your house checked by a paranormal group like TAPS. They are The Atlantic Paranormal Society, ghost hunters that are excellent at helping people in this type of situation.

Go up there in the day time with a shaker of flour and sprinkle all around. If there is some one up there, the footprints would show. Get a few mouse traps and set them around too, as
there is a logical explanation for this. Could very well be some smart *** playing tricks. Another idea, is to fasten some threads across here and there with tape, and see if they are disturbed. Best wishes, and make sure the access door is locked.

First, your kids are not crazy. I'm not sure if this is what you're thinking, of course, but since this is in mental heath, I'm just letting you know.
If your kids are telling you this individually, then they may actually be hearing something. If you think they have discussed it first, it could be one's overactive imagination influencing the others.
I personally believe in ghosts, due to about a billion inexplicable experiences (including being thrown out of bed). That could be what it is. Keep an ear out yourself, and keep an open mind. If you hear it too, or if your kids start to get REALLY scared, please consider this as a possibility. I'm not saying it's something bad or anything...it could just be someone visiting their old home or something. If you think this could be it, you can either get professional help (www.theshadowlands.net/ghost has links to your area) or try to tell it to leave yourself.
Again, it could just be your children's imaginations. Kids are naturally afraid of attics, thanks to movies and books. Reassure them that everything is fine and you are keeping an eye and ear out yourself. :-)
Good luck! Hope this helped. Everything will be a-ok.

It could be a bird, or a mouse, or a squirell or groundhog.
Just get a flashlight and investigate.
Throw a garlic bulb in the attic to keep pests out.
If u dont see anything, then u have a ghost in your house.
Just put a cross near the attic in case it is an evil ghost.

ha, "a ghost living" in your attic? Your kids are probably looking for attention. Try to discuss the sounds with them, allowing them to explain the sounds to you rather than you judging the source without evidence. Houses make many noises. Ghosts make noises too. Go figure.

Maybe one night you should go into their rooms and try to listen for the sounds. You might have a ghost living in your attic. But I bet it's your kids just trying to fool you.

Call an exterminator!! You likely have rats at best. It could be squirrels, depending upon where you live. When I was a kid we had squirrels in our attic and it sounded like something much larger. In any case, the exterminator can tell you what kind of critter you have.

Can you get into the attic? Could be an animal. I had a squirrel in mine once eating nuts and it was very loud and scared ME nuts! Otherwise,,,houses settle and make creaks and moans. Assure them that all is well and maybe spend a nite in their room with them.
