My daughter touched the front of a gas fireplace today and I took her to emergancy, they gave me some cream for her, and gave her some codiene, they also wrapped her hand in gauze, she keeps pulling it off, does anyone have any tips on how to keep it on her. She is sleeping right now, so I put it on, but I am concerned about tomorrow, The doctor said to try and keep it on her for three days.
Any suggestions would be great.

You could try putting those mittens that have the string that connects them together on over the gauze. Or gloves or mittens that you safety pin to the ends of a long sleeve shirt.

My daughter burnt herself on a light bulb at 8 months. Second degree burns as well. Not too much you can do to keep the gauze on, but they gave me a gauze wrap that is meant for someone's wrist or something and they cut a little thumb hole in it. It worked for a few days anyhow.

Try to keep the gauze on her hand and over top the gauze, take some ace wrap and put it on her. She is less likely to mess with the ace wrap because it's elastic and if put on correctly, will stay in place. Ace wrap is the wrap they use for people who have had a sprained ankle, wrist, knee, etc. You can find it in most pharmacies or ask your doctor for one. I hope I have been helpful in your search for an answer. Good Luck!

I agree with wrapping both of her hands. I burned my hand on the stove when I was little my mom wasn't paying attention and I placed my hand smack dab on a burner she had just taken a boiling pot off of and my hand basically cooked. She took me to the ER and after picking off the charred black skin they put some ointment on it and wrapped it in gauze and wrapped the other hand in gauze as well...I don't know why, I can only surmise that it was to keep me from pulling off the bandage of my burned hand and to make them look the same. I didn't try pulling the bandage off.

Poor baby! Yeah, you want to try to keep it as clean as possible to prevent the burn from getting infected. I have never had this happen, but I have a two-year-old and so what I might try is to get a glove for her hand...paint it or make it finger puppets and then teach her to play games with it. I find that if I can turn drudgery into fun for my kids, they are willing to participate.
Poor girl...give her a kiss from me and I hope she heals fast.

i wanna say to try and bribe her. if she's really young, say that if she doesn't take the gauze off, you'll give her a small present. if she behaves, go to the dollar store and get her a few hair clips or a cheap thing of nail polish. it makes her feel that she has something to work for and will get something in the end.

you can try mitts.. but she will probably take them off. try something called 'mitt movie'. Tell her that she has to wear the gloves for one whole movie. Then giver her a reward or a prize or an ice cream. Let her watch several movies.. that will ensure it stays on 1/2 the day anyway...
That's all I can think of

i know this sound a little cruel but it is for the best interest of your child. wrap both hands up so pulling off the gauge is more difficult. or even wrap one of your hands up to show her that mommy has one too.

Wrap up her good hand also. It will make it harder for her to remove the bandage. Explain to her that uncovering it will make it hurt a lot. Kids are smart, talk to her.
