Because religious people believe that atheism and morality cannot coexist. If God doesn't exist, then we're raping murderers who masturbate all day.

It all follows the 'Moron Creed', you're either with us, or you're against us.

'Christianity' has been used a a human population control mechanism for two thousand years. Things are no different now than they were during the declining years of the Roman Empire, in fact, there are many parallels.

The super-wealthy have become 'multi-national', and 'globalisation' is the 'buzz-word' for big business. These things are just the latest terminology for the same handful of people who have been subjugating the masses for centuries.

BushCo. are the current oppressors, the neo-cons have their concept of the 'New American Century', and a White House insider was quoted as saying :

"This is our reality we are creating now, and you, all you people out there, will still be trying to work out how to react to this situation, and we, we will be creating the next, and there will be nothing that any of you can do about it"

The whole 'born again' thing, linked to the 'end time' scenario, is just the final fling of the plutocratic control system, and as usual the organised religions are marching hand in hand with the oppressors. The existence of 'God' is as irrelevent to them, as it apparently is to you.

It is badly perceived because it shows something vital to be missing from the person claiming to be atheist! Why trust someone that doesn't believe in anything?? I personally have never been able to get a straight answer from an atheist on why they are an atheist or what that entails exactly. First of all, atheism is NOT a religion, an ideology, or even a philosophy; rather it is the very absence of those. Atheist don't believe in, and they deny the existence of any higher powers (godS). That is about as specific a definition as you can get from an atheist. Any dictionary or reference book tells you what I said, but the atheists are fixing to jump all over me, but not one of them will tell me something I could actually use as a defining point on atheism. YOU are talking about belief and God (with a capital letter), and you claim to be atheist!

I think because most of us have never actually met and talked with an atheist. I hadn't until I started to participate here.

I truly believe the fundies are in the minority in this country. We need the moderates and liberals to stand up and make a stand. The only voices we hear are the voices of ignorance. We can expose the religious right for the idiots they are.

Because the majority of people here are Christians, and they're supposedly "more moral" than atheists. I think that's an incredibly close-minded thing to think. Atheists are just as moral as Christians + vice versa.

Atheism is a fairly new religon. Actually, it isn't. But most atheists weren't very open about it. Soon, as it grows older, it will be less taboo.

When I told my mother that I was an atheist, it was hard for her to accept that. She had grown up in a convent, with the fear of God. She said, "Apologize for saying that, or you will go to hell." Actually, if God does exist, then she would be going to hell with me. Why? Because she doesn't love God. She's just afraid of hell and God's power.

It's probably because most atheists had theistic parents. So they went against their parents beliefs. Atheism is slowly growing in number. However, it doesn't seem fair to me that a religon, (and yes, I consider atheism a religon-it's a belief on spiritual things) must rely on number for respect.

Sheeple mentality. The U.S. is not very kind to free-thinkers, individuals, or people who can be considered 'other'. It isn't the government, it's the people. They want to feel normal, so they expect everyone to have everything in common with them.

Take a look at our history, we are a very, very bigoted people. Religion and Sexual Preferences are the Gender and Race of our generation. We used to think it was okay to enslave others, now we don't. Eventually, just as with gender and race, things will change, slightly. But for now, we're stuck with the great divides.

this is a Christian nation. the majority of americans who claim any religion, claim to be Christians. so, do the math - the majority rules.

as far as how atheism is perceived? i hadn't heard of any atheists being lynched or having their rights taken away, have you? some may get angry with an atheist pov, others may ignore your atheist pov, but it's likely the majority just feel sad that you don't understand the message of the cross.

the bible has this to say:

matt. 7:6
Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.

It's only badly perceived by those who aren't Atheists.

I do not believe it is badly perceived by all Americans, only the bible-thumpers. There is NOTHING bad about being a "free-thinker". I'm sure many atheists will correct your statement on here (about being "badly perceived").
