Does anybody know how much DNA testing costs in the state of Illinois? Any range will help. Its between my neice and her father. Her father is incarcerated and I have custody. Her paternal grandparents are now trying to take her from me. I want to prove paternity before they try anything, he is not on the birth certificate.

The grandparents already filed paper work to be her guardians. My sister stood in front of the judge and said 'yes, Johnny is the father'. So Im kinda stuck in between and rock and a hard place. I need to establish paternity because there is a chance that she is not his.

Funny you should ask, my sister is currently incarcerated also. As of April 17th 2007. She should be out by the end of 2008. The father will not be out until 2017 is his earliest release date.

Why would you want to establish paternity in this case? If paternity is questionable and the father is not listed on the birth certificate it will be that much harder for the paternal grandparents to make a claim. As it is, they have to prove that they have a legal claim of any kind before they can sue for custody.

I believe a DNA test can cost anywhere from $300-$600. Normally they need a sample from the potential father and then they rule him out as the baby's father based on how closely the DNA matches the baby's. It concerns me that there could be so many possible fathers for your child at age 17. I'm not judging you, but please make sure you use protection if you are going to have multiple sex partners. Not only to prevent pregnancy, but also sexually transmitted diseases. You have to take care of YOU, sweetie.

If he's not on the birth certificate then he (and his parents) currently have no rights. I'd really caution you against establishing paternity for them. If its something they want to pursue then let them do the testing. As far as costs go, for a chain of custody DNA test you're going to be looking at about $500-$700.

400-800. Where is the mother? What if you prove he IS the father?. How old is the baby? How did you get custody? There are many factors the judge will consider before giving custody to grandparents. If their son is in prison they might not be the best people to have custody. Legal aid will help you fight this.
