Your mind functions very little while you sleep. Swallowing takes many nerve vessels that need to be transported from your brain. It would be the same as you putting your hand on something hot and your brain waves sending a message that OUCH THATS HOT. Do you swallow while you sleep? No. You can if your not in a deep sleep, and flopping about. In a good REM sleep you do not swallow.

Do You Swallow While Sleeping

Hi there,
"swallowing" is an act usually done voluntarily.
But during sleep, especially in people, who sleep with half opened mouth, there is exposure to air and hence there is drying.
This does NOT mean that swallowing cannot be "involuntary" ... sometimes, it does happen like that too..but rarely.. (eg : think about a scenario where somebody puts some salt into the mouth of a person who is
half asleep ! )
best wishes !

Dr. Albert is correct. We DO swallow while sleeping. We swallow all day long, usually without thinking about it.

Of course, you might be sleeping with your mouth open, but often it means you ate or drank something with sugar in it before you went to bed, assuming there is nothing medically wrong with you or you are not on any medications. Sugar dehydrates you. Do not eat any sweets after dinner time and your mouth will feel much better in the morning.

yes, swallow happens in your sleep when your awake and throughout any activities... It is normal to swallow without you intentionally swallowing...
dry mouth happens when mouth is left open then saliva tends to dry up and even with mouth closed you can get a dry mouth due to not being hydrated enough. such as you didn't take enough fluids during the day..

Not sure... sometimes I wake up with a dry mouth, and sometimes I wake up in a puddle of drool.
I just always make sure to keep water near my bedside.

Ive heard that in your lifetime you will swallow hundreds of spiders. I imagine these guys dont justt crawl all the way down ur throat so I think that the mechanic response, swallong, is still active even when you are asleep.

Frequently, it is so difficult to swallow during sleep that I am fully awake by the time I accomplish it.

yeah people swallow when they sleep.
but usually if you wake up with a dry mouth it means you've been breathing with your mouth while you're sleeping. at least thats what i've experienced because usually when i wake up with a dry mouth, i have a cold or bad allergies and i can't breathe through my nose.

i'm not quite sure of the answer to your direct question, but I do know that more often than not, you waking with a dry mouth indicated that you have slept breathing through your mouth.
