I am going for surgery in 3 weeks. Is it safe to continue taking birth control (Estrostep) pills? Can it interact with the anesthesia?

I've never heard of birth control pills causing adverse reactions under anesthesia. If you got the birth control elsewhere, please make sure to tell the doctor that you are taking it prior to surgery. Just to be safe.

Birth control pills will NOT interact with anesthesia, nor will the anesthesia interfere with the effectiveness of the pill.

PLEASE take your pill.

If it makes you nauseated on an empty stomach, take it the night before with some food. Do not eat on the day of your surgery.

This is a question you need to ask your doctor directly. I've never been told that bc pills interact with anesthesia but better safe than sorry -- ask you doc.

I've had surgery a few times and been on birth control the entire time--when you meet with the anesthesiologist the morning of your surgery, he/she will ask you what medicines and vitamins you take on a regular basis and work it around that. You can always call your doctor ahead of time to double check. Good Luck

It should be no problem, I would make sure with my Dr. if the birth control pill is still effective during the rest of the cycle. Some medications, esp. antibiotics screw up the pills effectiveness.

I don't think there's any reason to stop them, but check with your pharmacist.
