Some shops will allow it at 17 or even 16 with your parents permission. But it is not advised to do so before you are 18, and for good reason. Your body up until age 18 and sometimes till 20 - 21, is going through so many changes. By getting one before the age of 18 you are risking 1 scaring yourself (because of the constant weight gain and lose before, the tattoo stretches, shrinks, over and over causing scaring), not to mention the fact that you are mental not prepared for making a life long decision such as a tattoo. As much as medical science has improved, tattoos are still guaranteed till 6 months AFTER death!! That tattoo will be there till you skin decomposes! Are you really that grown up to make a decision that lasts that long?
Also, not tattoo artist who has any morals, kids, or a conscious will tattoo anyone, even with parents permission, before the age of 18.

16 is INCORRECT! I'm a licensed and professional body piercer in queens NY and my husband is a licensed tattoo artist. It is ILLEGAL for anyone anywhere in NY STATE to tattoo you if you are under the age of 18. So you must me 18 with city or state i.d NO EXCEPTIONS. if anyone will even consider tattooing you when your younger than that they are crooks and not professional. they could be fined alot of money or possibly lose their shop or license permanently. so if they are willing to risk that.. think what other corners they might be cutting for a lil extra cash.. u know.. like reusing DIRTY NEEDLES!!!!!!

By the way.. if your parent DOES sign for you somewhere .. they could be locked up for child abuse and lose you to the courts.Think I'm lying?? Look up the NYS tattoo laws!

Parent or not you need to be 18. No exceptions, however if you go into the city they might not card you depending on where you go. Try Village Pop on 6th Ave and West Fourth, they have never checked ID on me or anyyy or my friends. Good Luck.
