I'm 43 and was diagnosed with ADD about 6 weeks ago. My APRN put me on Adderal XR...the first few days I felt so much better but he wants me to take 1 when I get up and then more everytime I think it's wearing off. I can't really tell the difference...so when I saw him last time he told me to take one three times a day. The pharmacist was freaked..said he'd never filled a dose that high and that it wouldn't be good for my brain. I'm having trouble sleeping (nothing new) so now the APRN wants me to take a short-acting stimulant right before bed because the adderal makes me sleepy. I feel like my brain needs time to be off the stimulant and I don't want to fry my neurons. The medicine doesn't give me energy or make me "high". It does help though because before I took it I was ready to quit nursing school and since I've been on it I finished the semester with 3 "A's" and 1 "A-". Does anybody know anything about the patch that you can get? Any advice? I see my APRN tomorrow.

My cousin was on this for narcolepsy (falling asleep all the time) and she eventually had a heart attack...and was face into the bed when it happened (no oxygen for a long time) and now has no short term memory (brain damage...along with the heart damage). This is a powerful drug. She was 53 when it happened.

Adderall XR is designed to be taken once a day.....period.
If you need 'booster doses' later in the day you would want immediate release forms.

That doesn't mean that you can't take more than one at a time however. I have a few patients that are taking 2 per day.

You didn't specify the strength you were on. If you were taking three 10 mg per day that isn't alarming. It would be a waste of money when you could take one 30 mg. Now if you have been prescribed three 30 mg for example that would be alarming to any Pharmacist!

Adderall XR is only supposed to be given once a day. I would have refused to fill that prescription. No where in the monograph does it say it is okay to take this medication more than once a day. The XR is made to last an entire day. Taking more than 30mg per day, will not help you. In fact, if you take too much, you might overdose.
You can take regular Adderall several times a day.
There is a patch formulation of methylphendiate (Ritalin). The patch is named Daytrana.

i'm sorry, i just don't buy it. there are diseases out there that can cause a doctor to diagnose you with add. adderal xr taken is time released. if you did fine on one, then you do fine on one.

my question is have they ruled out diseases that are common amongst those in your age group? liver disease can cause a person to become forgettful or have an issue with a "foggy" type feeling. i would certainly look into other avenues instead of relying on someone who probably wrote you a prescription in less than 15 minutes time in his office!

what about irritable bowel syndrome? IBS can cause an issue regarding the serretonin in the brain. it starts however in the gut.

i've given you two diseases you really ought to read up on that have your issue, hepatitis c and ibs.

good luck!
