They don't go anywhere. There are in a "deep sleep" until the judgement day, where they are awaken and judged for they've done on Earth and asked if they know Jeusus Christ/Yeshua HaMesiach - he's your ticket out of eternal torture.

I believe that when a person dies their body becomes the earth and the soul travels across the river of life into the Otherworld. There the soul is allowed rest and meditation/ reflexion on the life lesson they learned. From there they are reborn or if they have learned all they can from this world they move on to a higher dimension where they may learn the next level of life lessons. Once they have learned every lesson the souls energy returns to the All or life force from whence all things come. There they find pure bliss.

Physically, the body stops working, the brain dies, and decay begins to set in. Now, according to the Skeptics, that's the end of it, the final slide down into oblivion.
The religonist will claim a soul, an afterlife, judgment, heaven, hell(tm), or even a jump back into the world in a new incarnation.
Take your pick, we all get to find out what happens eventually. My intuition sez it is going to be something that will surprise everyone.
Even if it's just the last dreams of a dying brain, how long does a dream last?
