I have read medical research which says that holding excess flatus in the colon can lead to rectal lesions. The recomendation is not to hold the fart in.

I'm going to tell you like I tell my fifth grade students, please pass gas outside the classroom! If you must pass gas, have a little respect for others around you and hold it long enough to go to the restroom to pass it. It is both disruptive and rude!

For the one who said, "Stop teaching," I LOVE my job! I wouldn't have it any other way except gasless...LOL!

Although passing gas in public is considered rude by some people, everyone passes gas whether in public or in private. Currently, it is considered proper to leave the room before farting and if something does slip, say "excuse me". I am not sure if holding in excess gas can cause serious problems or not, but it can definitely cause bad stomach aches and cramps.

Another thing to consider is the circumstance. For instance, there is a big difference in passing gas while you are with friends and doing it at, lets say, church or something.

I don't think it's bad manners at all. It's a natural bodily function that people have no control over. Is it rude to urinate? Sneeze? Cough?

If you're forcing yourself to fart to be funny, that's rude, but if it's a "natural" fart and just comes out, then it's not rude. You should excuse yourself after doing so, however. Not that it's anything to be ashamed/embarrased about--mainly you're excusing yourself for the smell (like you have any control over that either, I know, but still...) :)

Right, I don't think anyone is saying you should hold it in, it's a natural human function and it must come out. However, you should excuse yourself (stepping away from others) if you can in time, before it happens. And, if you cannot excuse yourself before it happens, excuse yourself when it comes out. If someone gets a serious attitude about it, it's their issue, as long as you know you didn't intend to do it around others.

And, the fifth grade teacher that's annoyed with fifth grade farters needs to STOP TEACHING!!!!!!!!!!!!! Punks is not the word you need to use to describe your students. Go work with adults. They are far more mannerable, usually.

If he has the door closed and is not bragging about it, flushes and washes his palms, then who cares?! once you gotta bypass, you gotta bypass! might want to you truly he did it through your the front door or in his pants? once you're that "anal", you ought to have a demanding time staying in a relationship sorry to say.

It is a necessary human function, never try to hold a fart in, it travels up your spine and enters your brain and that's where sh1tty ideas come from!

You and everyone else on this planet pass gas at least 14 times a day, you just don't always know it! No, it won't hurt you, just cause some cramping. Let it fly! Just be polite enough to do it away from others if you are uncertain of its "stinkability".

I believe in "western" culture that it is still most definitely bad manners, but that most of us have a "who gives a crap" attitude about it. The last three jobs I've held were all "gas friendly."
