As well as using other brands of orange liqueur, like Grand Marnier or Tuaca, you might try some Limoncello, a lemon liqueur. It can also be good to keep Triple Sec or an orange liqueur and substitute the lime with fresh lemon. I usually prefer mine without salt, but a good alternative to salt is crystallized or rock sugar, like sugar in the raw. The best way though, to really make a margarita better or different is to change the tequilla. Try using a silver tequlla, or one that is aged(añejo). Once you get away from the Cuervo and Sauza you will taste the good flavors of the tequilla more than the mixers. Some of the best that aren't super expensive are Corralejo, Corazón, and Leyenda del Milagro.

Try margarita mix with Cointreau, an orange flavored liqueur, It is actually in the original margarita recipe. Or a finer tequila will lessen the alcohol burn.

Not exactly a margarita without the tequila. That's like Christianity without Christ.

a side car is a margarita variation, sub tequila with brandy, add triple sec, sour mix, splash of lime, strain into a martini glass with a sugar coated rim, garnish with a cherry. it's nice but with out tequila it's not a margarita

Ugh!, I don't believe you said that.

No tequila in a Margarita. Then its NOT a Margarita.

Sacrilege!!

Some things are sacred and you can't mess with them.

No.

This is like asking for a good cookie recipe without cookie dough, or a good sandwich recipe without bread.

Just make a different drink and call it by its name.
