Alot of older people lived through the depression..
Alot of older people are on fixed incomes. Older people usually dont use charge cards or buy anything they cant pay for with cash. If your parents are satisfied with there furniture why would they buy new? Its there oney to spend as they wish. They also fear the future. How and Who will take care of them when they cant care for themselves. Look up what a nursing home cost and doctor bills, medications, do you have any idea what there expenses are now. Maybe they cant afford new funiture.

They lived through the great depression 1929 thru 1945, when the federal reserve actually let the money supply of the USA shrink. The stock market crashed in october of 1929 and many people had reverter clauses in simple mortgages that sent their property back to the original owner if they did not pay their mortgage. Some people lost everything, including their homes. People from their generation usually pinch every cent they can, because they remember not having a cent. They are good people, but the depression made them very cautious about money. Many of them throw nothing away.

Some have lived through the Depression or heard a lot about this time period.

Or they may not covet material possessions. Some older furniture is made better. My wife and I have some of her mothers old furniture. It was very well made. So we had a professional reupholster it. He even re-did the woodwork. Most of our friends thought we bought new. That was twenty years ago, and it still looks great!

Maybe your parents aren't cheap.

Perhaps they couldn't afford new furniture AND provide you with the things they never had. So be happy they chose to spend money on you instead of new furniture. I'm sure as soon as you move out they will pass the 70s furniture on to you and buy themselves something new.

Most older people are on a fixed income. It is not a lot of money each month, so they spend and save wisely. Besides, if something still works, it doesn't matter how old it is.

Hispanic Parents can be set in their ways - they can be frugal (as in the use of material resources.), probably don't think there is anything wrong with the furniture - except it's out of style now, and they know - style's come & go.
You may wanna breakdown and buy them a newer style for some occassion - I'm sure they'll love it.

Because it took them a long time to earn the money they have and want to keep it...Also, it is good that people keep things as long as they still serve the purpose...too many have a disposable mantality and that is why land fills are getting full and natrual resourses are running out....Besides, maybe your parents just like the furniture.....
