Well in years gone by when people didn`t have proper names, you would be known by your trade - like john the butcher, or harry the blacksmith - things like that. Your kids would be known as blacksmith`s daughter, or baker`s son. Then when birth certificates were introduced, the baby would be simply written as child of john the baker - something like that. That`s how people have their surnames now. If you think about it - every surname has a meaning or some sort of link to a trade. That`s how it started. People did start making their own names, changing the spellings and such, as time went on, and they passed down in families.I know as i researched this when i did my family tree, and it`s amazing how much sense it makes when you think about it.

There is the fact that when second names proved necessary, people referred to the person's trade.
Thus the blacksmith became John Smith.
The guy who made meals became John Cook.
AAHHHH! But FIRST names ...there is the rub!
We can only guess.
However, the guess is not difficult.
You have 2 children, you wish the attention of one of them.
What do you do?
You provide a distinctive label.

Jehovah called his very first creation Michael, and as they worked together they named all the angels etc. However, when Adam was created, they gave him the opportunity to name all earthly creations, since before he sinned, Adam and Eve had dominion over the earth.

God did. (He came up with everything except the bad stuff, which we humans made up with the help of Satan, who we are supposed to know is bad, but our stupidity keeps us in the dark.)
