What is a short haired, mid-size, dog that can run 8 MPH for 10 miles?

Dogs w lots of stamina are the herding dogs and the artic breeds such as huskies and malamutes. These breeds were designed to work the whole day, specially the artic dogs. They are supposed to run the whole day pulling a sled. Most of these breeds come in smooth coats varieties (aka short hair). Other good choices are the dalmatians (bred to follow horse carriages the whole day) and dobermans. Before buying a puppy, check w your breeder to make sure that the parent's hips are in good shape to maximize the probabilities that your puppy's anatomy is ready for the challenges.

I strongly recommend against a bulldog or any short-nosed breeds, they have no stamina whatsoever and the exertion will cause a lot of breathing problems, may end up collapsing their tracheas or damaging some of the muscles and cartilages in their throat. They can have lots of energy for the first 5 minutes, but that's about it. As someone else said, greyhounds are sprinters and may not last that long either.

First off, neither a Whippet or a Greyhound will run for 10 miles. They are sprinters. My son tried to run a 5k with my Whippet and he ended up having to quit 1/2 way through because the dog refused to go any further.
Get a Kelpie, a smooth coated Border Collie, a Australian Cattle dog, or a Vizsla.

Get a boxer. They are full of energy, love to run, are mid-sized and very short haired. They usually get along well with other dogs especially if you neuter them early.
