Everyone runs for time...no spots are locked in. You get the time, you make the race.

First and foremost, do away with the Past Champions Provisional. Just because you were great 10 years ago, doesn't mean you're good enough to race today. (My apologies to the sentimental favorites - sometimes, it's best just to move on.)

Secondly, increase the number of starting positions to 44 or decrease to 42 - a nice, even number (the 43rd spot was for the Past Champions Provisional anyway).

Thirdly, award points for qualifying. They're already getting more points for wins this season. You could make it the inverse of their qualifying position and give a bonus for the pole. (1st = 43 points + 5 points, 43rd = 1 point)

This will make it more competitive for the go or go homers, who concentrate on quailfying every week. The "protected" entries will always go for the points, since it's all about getting to the chase.

Fourth - If you're going to protect a car/driver and guarantee them a spot in the field, then it should be the top car for each team (granted, there are a few teams that only have one car) inside the top 35 in points. They still have to qualify, but are guaranteed a starting position, be it 1st or 43rd.

The rest should qualify on time.

Alternately:

If you're going to protect the entire top 35, let them qualify on time.

Then qualify the go or go homers - have a "B" main after qualifying - like a ten-lap dash at a short track, with the starting positions based on their qualifying time. The top 8 make the race, filling in the last 8 or so spots and the remainder go home.

First, quit begging for stars. Answer others questions and make your opinion count. Get some "best answers". Show you know your stuff.

Now, for your question. I say expand the field to 50 cars. That gives even more teams and their sponsors to get in the race. Then let the best 50 qualify on time then go racing.
