However, I will not deny the fact that there are some people who USE it as such (propaganda, that is.)

I don't agree that religion is ancient propoganda. Religion is a spiritual relationship between a person and God.

However, when you think that before universal education, the priesthood of any religion were likely to be the only educated people positioned around a country and were therefore the most efficient way of getting a message across. If a ruler realises that his subjects are getting food poisoning from eating shellfish, for example, and he wants to send out a warning, the obvious way is to spread the message via the priests. The message then appears to be the coming from God. I'm sure this is how half the religious dietary laws happened. But that's just the trappings of religion. Is that the sort of thing you meant?

I think the main idea of Jesus's teachings are that people should do good. But some people getting used to comfort live (even since 'ancient' times) would resort from giving up their luxury for the 'common good'.
This is where laws, doctrines, supreme beings, and distant future promises are ascended for.
Well we can simply say to scare people, or to persuade them into giving up some of their 'self-double-cushion' and then starts to (in our language) give more toward the community.

We all know how capitalist's double-(triple-quadruple)self-cushion mind works: Get some living insurance and savings, then get some more for our childrenS, and then some more for our grandchildrenS, and so on and so forth..
Chinese culture are quite well known for the-have-people preparing things until their seventh descendants.

The main idea of Jesus's teaching is compassion and humanitary works apart from stupid supreme being rules.

The rest of the church doctrines were probably developed by the apostles relatively toward aculturing this message into different kinds of communities. Some of the less-educated people would responded more toward threats, distant future promises, etc.. than normal common sense.
Again, they refuse to release their double-cushion, for people they barely know.
Note, that they didn't have live TV-news at that time to really be exposed to harsh environment even a few steps away from their door step.

We, stupid modern people, simply took their (Budha, Jesus, st.Paul, st.Thomas Aquinas, and other philosophers') words without considering the context of where and when is was said.
Some people realising this, probably kept their silence out of knowing that most people surrently still desperately need to be 'forced' into environmental conciousness by doctrines, etc.. as a moral cushion to replace their capitalistic cushion..

so.......

Not just ancient--it still works on a suprising number of people, amazingly.

To quote the great George Carlin:

"Spooky language! Designed to scare and control primitive people. In no way does superstitious nonsense like this apply to the lives of intelligent civilized humans in the 21st century."

Yes and no. No because we are in the now and we deal with the current interpretations of these religions.

Religions are supposed to be organizations of people who are conscious of God and want to live in a happy, God loving community. Or visa versa, if it's a negative vibe.

Yes because it is old scriptures, but no again because they are misinterpreted.

For example, God is not a being in the heavens judging people. But rather God is the very energy that flows through us and all around us. God is in all things, undefinable really.

Chances are, yes.

There may be some spiritual high being, however, I think humans have twisted "religion" to use it for control and against things they feel uncomfortable with. Also to explain the unexplained and to make up an afterlife. There are good guidlines in the bible, but then there is just insane stuff like stating homosexuality as wrong.

No, in ancient times, religion acted more as a virus, constantly spreading through out the world, but today it acts more as a parasite leaching off the power of the government.

Well I am a Christian [[Baptist]] and I believe that whatever YOU feel like in believing is fine. Baptists can get dunked, Catholics can get sprinkled, and whomever else may be soaked with "Holy Water" or lake water and STILL go to Hell. The only true way to get to where you are going [[Heaven or Hell]] is to ask Jesus to come into you heart and save you by confessing that He is your Lord and Savior, died on the cross for you, and that He rose again on the 3rd day. Then, and ONLY then, can you enter the pearly gates.

Ancient propaganda for controlling the masses you call it? Let's see what's more acceptable these days: virulent, flag-waving nationalism, eat-all-you-can-eat consumerism, self-defeating decadence in the name of "freedom".

The tune may have changed but the lyrics are still the same: Our history shows that we humans need to believe in something larger than ourselves. We are hopeless that way. When we jettison religion something else slips in to fill the "propaganda" gap.

religion was invented by the more powerful individuals in society to keep us normal lay people under control by using fear (the wrath of god) bit like the biblical police force really, i was brought up a roman catholic spent most of my life feeling guilty for just breathing and took years of therapy to undo, i think having faith in something that is not tangable is pure bloody lunacy I beleive and trust in myself.
